What's your hobby?

Other than music listening and reading books, I recently tried to get back into SWL (shortwave listening) after not doing it for 15 years. The process has been quite bumpy. SWL involves listening to international broadcasters, but for this time of year and my location mostly what I've gotten is Christian broadcasters, Cuban stations and Radio Marti (the propaganda arm of the Voice of America directed at Cuba). I've also managed to hear Radio Slovakia, Radio Romania, the Voice of Vietnam and China Radio International.

Reception and intelligibility of the broadcasts have been mostly poor, with a lot of noise. This is mostly due to living in an apartment, and being surrounded by devices like computers, wireless routers, cellphones and other modern gadgets that affect shortwave reception. I am also hampered in that I can't setup an antenna outside, living in an apartment complex. The little shortwave radio I got did come with a 20 foot wire antenna which I ran to the inside of my living room window, but it didn't make much difference.

However, I did try getting a more expensive radio that had better sensitivity, which resulted in broadcasts being a lot more understandable and less noisy. Unfortunately, that radio turned out to be defective and I had to return it. Once I get the refund for that return I may try buying another one of the same model to see if I can get a good one.

It's a very fun hobby, but the reality is that the emergence of the internet has caused much international broadcasting to die down. Many stations I use to listen to years ago are no longer on the air, because countries can do their foreign outreach more effectively on the net. Still, there's something about hearing a broadcast over the air that feels more satisfying than the effortlessness of listening to a stream or podcast.

This is my current radio:

Oh, I loved listening to short wave radio. My father borrowed on from the college for a bit when I was in high school. It was the size of a small suitcase and had an enormous antenna. The tuning was via a big knob in the middle that turned by micro steps. I remember listening to broadcasts from all over Europe, Canada, and Mexico. I don't think I ever picked up something from Asia (too far away, I guess).

I would love to get a little set up again, like yours. I have an emergency radio that cranks up and has AM/FM and shortwave. The only shortwave stations I can pick up on it are Christian broadcasts. Meh.

My hobbies are travel, cooking, gardening, photography, and going to flea markets.

Amazon has a varied selection of shortwave radios. Tecsun has a good rep, but I think their quality control is hit or miss. Another good manufacturer is Eton/Grundig (same company).

Yeah, I looked Tecsun up on Amazon and the price ranges are quite varied. The "suitcase" was an old Grundig, as is my little emergency one. I wonder if those big, old ones are for sale somewhere. I would love to have one of those again.

What is Longwave radio? Never heard that term before. Yes, I understand what it is based on the name, but how does it work? Is that what I would search out to find stations from the other side of the planet because the long waves can travel further? Or do you get clearer sound? Hmmm. Time to look that up.

eBay has vintage SW radios for sale.

Longwave is a broadcast band, but it doesn't travel as far as shortwave. It's not really used in North America and you won't pick up anything on it here.

Actually, I have a brand new hobby. It's called "running an online music forum". Not only have I started learning a whole new piece of cool software, I also have met the nicest people. :)

Should have done this years ago....
You are doing better already than the last iteration. Keep on keepin on!

Curiously, I felt compelled to look up the definition of hobby.

1. an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure
I don't like this one, as it includes too many things I would designate as simply killing time. Surfing the internet should not be considered a hobby. Watching tv for seven hours a day is not a hobby.

IMO, the definition of hobby starts with the one above, but a hobby has to be something that you get knowledgeable about performing, and/or measurably better skilled at performing, and/or learn so much about a subject that you might on some level be considered an expert or at least an aficionado.

OK, now that I'm done talking to myself about what a hobby is ...

I'm not sure I have an active hobby these days, aside from listening to music and reading books. When I was younger, I was a voracious collector of comic books. After high school and into my early 20s I was a mild pursuer of athletics, basketball, swimming, lightly working out. Interspersed through those years were smaller undertakings like computers and stereo equipment and general electronics. Later, I wrote a lot and that was a great hobby for me. Unfortunately, writing (along with exercising) has mostly disappeared from my life since I became a father.

Earlier this year, I started a new writing project. I only get down to actually writing so rarely I can't consider it a regular event yet. The problem is my "leisure time" comes in spurts, not chunks. For me, writing requires chunks, ideally, two or three-hour chunks. At the very least, I'd want forty-five minutes or one hour for an uninterrupted writing session. That means writing only two or three times a month, because my leisure time arrives in 10-minute to 30-minute spurts.

However, I think about it daily. Flipping over ideas I can't wait to implement. Hopefully, I can increase my actual writing time to the point where this is an actually hobby and not just a desire.

Hobbies (in the requisite no particular order):

- music, both listening and playing. These days I only really play piano, though there are a couple of guitars laying around
- restoring the house
- restoring the barn
- restoring the yard
- technology of various sorts
- cooking

By way of explaining the three restoring items: the property here was once owned by a landscaper but he passed away about 8 years ago and it hasn't really been maintained since so lots of work to do. If anyone is in the Nashville area and wants rocks you can fill up a truck or 10 for free here....

Writing and playing music.

I've been playing in bands since the early 90's (mainly drums, but also bass, guitar).

First band was a cover band (Kyuss, Nirvana, other grunge acts). It was me and a bunch of older guys (I was just getting out of jr. high and they were seniors) from out of town.

Second (first "real") band started off as a mix of old punk rock/hardcore with me just playing drums. We were together a year 1/2, recorded one demo, and broke up. The guitar player (and former "singer"...he was terrible) and I kept playing and found a bass player 9 months later and we reformed. We were gig ready within a month and were together another year and 1/2 (recorded a second demo...all one takes...on whatever equipment was in the studio) with me on drums and screaming, I mean vocals.
By that time we played a mix of pop punk/hardcore/punk rock all mashed up. We didn't care.

While in this band, I joined another band that I had been a fan of for a few years...the local, infamous drunken punks Mystic Fix (documentary was being made, but shelved...www.cajunhell.com)

First real band, second demo.

That band folded and I started jamming with some other guys for about 6 months. Didn't turn into anything.

Joined up with some old friends from another band on bass in the summer of 2001. After 2 practices I got on drums when the drummer (who wasn't that good) went make a phone call. We were a pop punk band...you know...that annoying s**t like New Found Glory...haha. We were together from 2001-2003. Recording several demos...including an album that was shelved due to us breaking up...one reason being the "engineer" (who has since become quite the go-to producer since) didn't back up the tracks and erased the snare, backing vocals, guitar overdubs, edits, etc.

What we were left with were "alternate"/bare bone versions with no backups/overdubs/edits. Nearly 2k down the toilet. A few months down the road we were going to fly out and stay with the owners of Drive Thru Records (2 of the guys were good friends with them...their old band was on the "You'll Never Eat Fast Food Again" comp.) to "audition". Second to last show we opened up for Fall Out Boy, last show was a live/on the air show playing center court of the local mall on a Friday afternoon. Amps, drums, everything loud. Little kids jumping up and down. My last show with them was supposed to be with Rufio and Motion City Soundtrack, but the date got switched and I didn't show up (no one relayed that message...I wasn't speaking to any of them). We broke up.

We played/hosted many shows...bands like Bayside and As Cities Burn (who played their first show opening for us...they were awful) opening for us and us opening for Unsung Zeros, Huntingtons, Digger, Staring Back, Mae, twothirtyeight, Attention:, and a bunch more that I can't think of.

Played in another band called Mugsy where I sang and played drums...punk rock. Recorded some rough practice room demos. Lasted about 6 months.

Reformed/joined Mystic Fix from 2006-2007 on drums until founding member Chris Bennett (aka Criss Drunk) passed away.

In early 2011 started jamming with some old friends from a political/crusty hardcore band...which lasted a total of 4 practices. The bass player was super PC and I joked around too much. Haha.
Third practice:

Have played with a couple guys...for a couple years off/on...nothing serious.

I was laid off from the energy industry in 2015 and have been working a s**t warehouse job, weekend shift...and when I return back to some normal schedule...me and my best bud (who played for the local One Common Voice in the 90's...and with PA's Half Life in the late 80's-early 90's) are going to get something rolling.

We already have people bugging us to get in on the action. Haha. Not sure exactly what style we'll be shooting for...but I'm sure it's going to be loud and fast. Haha.

Reading, though not as often as I used to!
Music. I play French Horn in a couple of community bands. Last year I picked up the baritone to play "Tuba Christmas" concerts with my significant other (I can't say "girlfriend" anymore). I also finally purchased a decent acoustic guitar and am learning that and ukulele; I have two, a soprano and baritone!
Photography. We have a wonderful reservoir literally steps away and I take pictures every time we go!
Bird watching. We keep our feeders full. By the way, if you want a GOOD feeder consider one from Droll Yankee. Yes, they are pricey, but worth every penney!
Indoor and outdoor gardening. I grow my own!;)
