Audiophile Thread

Well this was a bust: I bought a tube socket saver. I received it today and it works. However, the socket is so tight that it's incredibly difficult to insert a tube and even more difficult to remove a tube. I thought the one I was trying to get out was going to crack.

The idea behind a socket saver is it plugs into the socket on the amp, and then you insert the tube into the saver, thereby "saving" the amp's socket from wear and tear. Unfortunately, the one I bought is completely impractical to use.

It only cost me $3.15 on eBay, so no big deal.

I will have to wrap my mind around the idea. You are saving the amp's socket from wear-and-tear and not the tube itself?

ETA: Never mind. By George, I think I've got.

Maybe this will help: This plugs into the socket of the amp, and the tube plugs into it.

I spoke too soon. I had the idea to loosen up the socket by plugging/unplugging a tube (that I could afford to lose) for about 10 minutes. It worked. I can now plug in and remove a tube from the socket saver while it's plugged into my amp.

Exactly. But this is what you want to avoid in the first place - a loose connection.

WHY AUDIOPHILES ARE PAYING $1,000 FOR THIS MAN'S VINYL

Interesting. With thousands of records in a collection to choose from, I'm not sure why one would pay 4 figures for a common classic rock title just because it is a "hot master". Imho better to invest the same bux in upgrading your sound system. His clientele:

"These clients are wealthy audiophiles with a penchant for classic rock who like nothing better than to sit in an overstuffed wing chair sipping Pétrus and reading Tom Port's vivid descriptions of the latest shootout winners."

I've met lots of folks like this at wine tastings. Pass the Brie, please.

Me two. I know I'm being tangential and critical, but to me, it's akin to: "I just love to hear the same progression of notes over-and-over again."

That reeks of decay to me. Where's the growth - or, at least, musical development - in doing the same things but merely acquiring more superficial discernment about it?

Don't they realize that there's some 19th century Victorian fiction in which they have been depicted as the villain?

I'll stop now.

Axo, you raise a really good point. For folks who can drop thousands for a bottle of Petrus or a copy of Led Zeppelin III, it's not about either the wine or the music.

I had a client once who served me a $100 bottle of French wine with frozen pizza. Unhappiest guy I ever knew. :(
