Cultural Resolutions

No not cultural REVOLUTION but resolutions. I'm not a huge "in the New Year I'm gonna give up" (though you do see I have some weight hopes for 2018), but I do try to set some resolutions each year involving music, movies, literature etc.

Do you have any goals for 2018 when it comes to reading, music, movies, TV binging etc.?
Post 'em hear!

Although I will set a Goodreads Reading Challenge this year (an easier to achieve one c/w last year as I really missed the mark), I have 3 big cultural goals this year.

1) My favorite all-time author is William Faulkner. I intend to read/reread all of his novels (not hard - he published 13 novels) along with some short stories then take a pilgrimage journey to his Oxford, MS home which is a pleasant drive from where I live (4-1/2 hours) and a very nice college town.

2) To misquote Terry Jones in Life of Brian, plan to listen to as much Back "as I can eat". I attended a Bach-toberfest concert this October and came up with this one. I've love loved Johann Sebastian but have never taken a formal approach to his large catalog. At 1128 works, I have NO intention in a complete listening (though there are some great anniversary "complete" sets out there) but definitely gonna listen to a lot

3) Finish my Acclaimed Songs playlist project (4000 songs left- still not a gimme)

I bought a full collection of his works in college and loved them, having read a few in high school. I just took the set off my old bedroom shelf at my mother's house and brought them back up here. I am going to reread them again too this winter.

Also, when we lived in Philly we used to go to the Philadelphia Museum of Art every Sunday morning. I've been to a few museums around here, but the big, good ones are up in Boston. I surely am not going to go every Sunday morning, but want to get up there more often to see some of the grand exhibits that come through, as well as the standing collections at the various museums in Boston and Cambridge.

Coincidentally, this afternoon I asked the kids to compose lists of resolutions. Not hard and fast resolutions, but just things they think they might want to do/accomplish in the coming year. I doubt we'll even revisit them after the next week or so, but it was interesting to see what they came up with.

Cultural Resolutions? Again, going off the assumption of more of what I'd like to see happen than things I plan to move heaven and earth to accomplish.

1) Visit museums more. I often yearn to stroll through a museum, but it seems like it's been a year since I last did so. I'd love to do so at least once a month for 2018.

2) Read more. I set and met a Goodreads goal of 20 books for 2017. I don't foresee the opportunity to read significantly more in 2018, and I'll probably set the coming year's goal at the same amount. However, I'm hoping to hit 25 books.
EDIT: Also, I've had a goal the last couple of years of reading more books by non-American authors, and/or books featuring non-USA locales/characters. 7 of my 20 books for 2017 fit that description. I'd like to increase that to 10. We shall see.

3) Live Entertainment. I want to attend at least one concert/play per month for 2018. If I had my full druthers, that number would probably total 18 rather than 12. It's just so fun to do these things with the kids as they age, I don't want to let the next few years dash by without spending time with them (together and one-on-one) at various live events.

4) Rearrange my TV time to accomplish two things. a) almost-binge watch various series that I want to catch up on. For instance, I want to try Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. b) I want to make a concerted effort to watch a few film classics I've never seen, such as the Godfather trilogy, Schindler's List, Casablanca, Good Will Hunting, and others.

I just stumbled across this thread while looking for something else. Like most of my personal Resolutions Lists (or even simple To-Do Lists) this one was never completed. :vic:

1) Did not happen. I did get in a few visits. This was when I was home schooling one of the girls and we'd stop at a couple of the Duke Museum or local galleries. I don't think I visited the NCMoA or any other nearby but out-of-town museums. I did take the kids to DC and we spent a little time at one or two Smithsonians. Not a complete failure of a resolution, but I don't feel good saying I met my goal.

2) According to Goodreads, I read 14 of my 23-book goal. Not nearly close enough. OTOH, I recall greatly enjoying 10 of them!

3) I can't remember how many live events I saw, but I doubt it was 18. Maybe close to 12. Until C19 arrived, I'd had a couple of good years of live eventing.

4) Still haven't seen an episode of Breaking Bad or Walking Dead, and probably won't any time soon. They've kind of faded from mattering much to me. I did watch Godfather I and II with JazzySon. We both enjoyed them, him especially. We never got to III. I/We did not watch Schindler's List or Casablanca. After I recommended it but failed to make time in my schedule quick enough to watch it with him, JazzySon watched GWH without me (although maybe that was in 2019) and loved it.

Now that 2020 is nearing its close, I wonder what our Cultural Resolutions will look like for 2021?
