A better title might be “It’s Like You Never Went Away”. The Paisley Undergrounders are back with their first album in 30 :eek: years and it’s fantastic. Steve Wynn’s songwriting has gained insight and the darker tone fits perfectly with the increased sonic attack. The record closes on a high note with original member Kendra Smith’s return for one song.

5.0 on the Sam-O-Meter. Psychedelia lives!

The Replacements - For Sale: Live At Maxwell's 1986



LOS ANGELES – In February 1986, The Replacements performed a classic live show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ. That night, a 24-track mobile studio was on hand to record the quartet as they careened through a 29-song marathon that mixed tracks from all of the band’s albums to date with B-sides and covers. Until now, that pristine recording of the legendary performance has only been available in low-quality bootleg form. Even so, Pitchfork has called the show “a fiery, focused set that would make a true believer out of any skeptic.”

On October 6, FOR SALE: LIVE AT MAXWELL’S 1986 will finally make its commercial debut as a two-disc set ($19.98) and a double-LP ($29.98). The music will also be available on digital download and streaming services. This marks the first live album by the band to see an official release on any of these formats. Their infamous 1985 live release The Shit Hits The Fans, famously recorded with an audience of roughly 30 people, was only available on cassette. The set also includes new liner notes by Bob Mehr, author of the New York Times bestseller Trouble Boys: The True Story Of The Replacements, as well as never-before-seen photos from the Maxwell’s show by noted music writer and photographer Caryn Rose.

Paul Westerberg, Bob Stinson, his brother Tommy Stinson, and Chris Mars made their major-label debut in October 1985 with the release of Tim on Sire/Warner Bros. When the acclaimed album reached the charts in January, the band was preparing to perform on “Saturday Night Live” — where they would later be banned for life for using profanity live on air — before launching a short East Coast tour that included the show in Hoboken.

The show at Maxwell’s would prove to be one of the last great performances by the four original members of the Replacements, a much beloved line-up including Bob Stinson on guitar, before his departure from the band in 1986. The songs they played spanned the band’s entire history while giving prominence to new material from Tim, including “Bastards Of Young,” “Left Of The Dial” and “Kiss Me On The Bus.” Mixed in were favorites like “I Will Dare” from Let It Be (1984) and “Color Me Impressed” from Hootenanny (1983). But it was songs from the band’s first album — Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash (1981) — that seemed to summon their best on furious versions of “Takin’ A Ride” and “I’m In Trouble.”

The original 24-track master tapes of the show sat in the Warner Music vaults until being given a proper mix in 2007, but it would still be another decade before the concert would get its official release. Mehr writes in the album’s liner notes: “Now, a decade later, and more than 30 years after the original concert, Replacements For Sale finally offers high-fidelity proof of the peculiar alchemy and unadulterated majesty of one of rock and roll’s greatest bands.”

Hiromi & Edmar Castaneda - Live In Montreal (2017)


This one was just released and it arrived by Amazon at noon. Hiromi's propulsive jazz piano is a big favorite around here. For this record, the ever-eclectic artist paired up with Colombian harpist Edmar Castaneda in a live setting. The results are really exciting. Much as I like Dorothy Ashby, Edmar injects the same kind of enthusiasm into his harp that Hiromi does with keyboards.

Highly recommended... and it's on Spotify! :thumbsup:

Neil Young - Hitchhiker


Ten songs recorded by Neil unplugged in the studio during the summer of 1976.

The session was lost to time, but the songs were not. They were re-recorded and spread across several decades of Neil Young albums, from Comes a Time and Rust Never Sleeps to Hawks & Doves and Le Noise. Presented together for the first time on this new archival release, they play more like a cohesive set of demos than a missing chapter in his story, but that doesn’t make it any less affecting.

Stephen Stills & Judy Collins - Everybody Knows (2017)


It's common knowledge that Judy Collins and Stephen Stills were an item for a short while in the late 60's. Recently the two septuagenarians reconnected and the result is this album. I'm always skeptical of albums purporting to be the rebirth of vintage artists but Everybody Knows is the real deal. Both Collins and Stills can still sing and their personal warmth shines through on every song. Most importantly, they can still perform with intensity. They wisely selected familiar material here for the most part.

Who Knows Where The Time Goes from 1968 is my favorite Collins album, in no small part because Stills contributed a lot of slash and burn guitar. Everybody Knows has the same fire, complete with a remake of Sandy Denny's title song. The lyrics sure have a deeper meaning given the 50 :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:) years that have passed.

David Crosby - Sky Trails (2017)


David Crosby is yet another illustration of the truism that you’re never as good as you think you are when you’re wasted. Now that he’s clean, Crosby is finally creating a significant body of solo work. This album boasts elements of jazz, a whiff of country, even a Joni Mitchell cover. Fine stuff.

Chris Hillman - Bidin’ My Time (2017)


Tom Petty lured the former Byrd-Burrito back into the studio and produced his strongest effort in years. Hillman’s solo records have been competent country rock (remember THAT?) but not particularly exciting. Tom hauled out the Rickenbacker for some jangle and Chris responded with some strong songs and vocals to match.

We have yet another reason to miss Tom Petty.

Yusuf/Cat Stevens - The Laughing Apple (2017)


To be honest, I haven’t paid much attention to The Artist Formerly Known As Cat in the last few decades. Not because of his religious views but because his music became less interesting. Well, the Catman is back. The producer (Paul Samwell-Smith) and guitarist (Alun Davies) from his Tea For The Tillerman heyday have returned and so have his songwriting skills.

Y/CS’s singing is right on the money too. His warm vocals are lluminated with the maturity of passing years. This one goes on the Best of 2017 list for sure. Highest recommendation.
