I just trimmed my olive tree. I wonder if the wood is suitable for smoking on the grill. Let's see what the intrawebz tells me.

Google tells me it's very nice for smoking; a more subtle mesquite flavor. I will use it tonight with some pork chops.

Do you get olives?
Not yet. They have only just started blooming in the past two years. The problem is they bloom in the dead of winter when there are no natural pollinators around. I have tried hand pollinating them with a q-tip, like I do with my citrus trees which also bloom in winter (and summer). No luck so far with the olive trees, although the citrus trees produce like gangbusters. One problem might also be that they aren't getting enough sun at our place. When we first bought our house, an elderly friend gifted me her olive tree. It had to be about 6' tall, and she always kept it in a huge sun room at her house that stayed pretty hot. When she gave it to me, it was covered in olives.

I like them for their shape, their craggy and knobby trunk and bark, and also that they are evergreen, so I have some color in winter when I bring them in.

Amazon is buying Whole Foods!

Not sure how I feel about this. Our household has a love/hate relationship with Whole Foods. Mrs. Ojai loves it, me not so much. Maybe the marketing will lose some of the "Shepard Fairey meets the Soviet Union" style.
I read about that a while back when it was just speculation. Not any more! Whole Foods has very good quality fresh products (I've only tried a few of their 365 house brand packaged goods), but man! The prices! We rarely go there, and if we do it's to get some cheese (they have a great selection) and chicken wings when they are on sale (everyone loves chicken wings!)
I have ordered a few food items from Amazon (imported goods that you can't easily find here). Really fair prices and delivered to my doorstep. What's not to like? Now, I don't imagine I will ever be ordering a few heads of Romaine lettuce, 3lb of chicken quarters, and a dozen ears of corn from Amazon. Some things just need to be selected in the store.

You're right about the quality at Whole Foods. Their cheeses, wines, seafood, produce and bakery are all top notch. Apart from the prices, another big minus is their eccentric product selection which always makes a second trip to Vons or Ralphs necessary.

We buy a a few food items from Amazon, mostly stuff that's hard to find in the store.

Interesting. I'm going to start drinking tomato juice when I'm congested and see if it's any different.

Mrs. Nickyboy is going down to visit her family this weekend.

Nickyboy alone at home= seafood feast!!!

I had to make a cup of coffee for my recipe last night and I noticed two things: my coffee machine literally makes a cup of coffee. 8 ounces. For some reason that struck me as funny. A cup of coffee is a CUP of coffee. No more, no less.
The second thing I noticed was that since my coffee maker is made in Switzerland, there is no reason for it to make an actual cup of coffee because that is not a unit of measure in Switzerland. Odd.

and a third thing is, if you write and read the word "cup" over and over it stops looking like a real word.
