Random Lyrics

All the way to grandma's house
I stayed on the narrow path
But my brother wandered off
Deep into the wood
Bitten twice by rattle snakes
Tangled in the poison oak
He fell down and broke his legs
Into a great ravine
When I arrived at grandma's house
She had made us tea and cake
She asked me where my brother was
I said I don't know and I ate
When I get to heaven
I'll be greeted warmly
Surrounded by the angels
As jesus takes my hand
I'll receive a mansion
On the river Jordan
And a crown made of diamonds
For a race well run
I won't ever lock my doors
I will trust my neighbors
Confident that they deserve
To be there in heaven, too

Are you watching "Pulp Fiction"?
Nope, just enjoying the Statlers.

Should we give it up? (I don't know)
Should we hang around? (I don't know)
Have another beer? (I don't know)
Or do something smart? (I don't know)
Should we hang it up? (I don't know)
Should we call home? (I don't know)
Who's got a stamp? (I don't know)
Can I use your hairspray?

Heaven... I'm in heaven,
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak.
And I seem to find the happiness I seek,
When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek.

Heaven... I'm in heaven,
And the cares that hung around me through the week,
Seem to vanish like a gambler's lucky streak,
When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek.

Oh, I love to climb a mountain,
And to reach the highest peak.
But it doesn't thrill me half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek.

Oh, I love to go out fishing
In a river or a creek.
But I don't enjoy it half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek.

Dance with me! I want my arms about you.
The charms about you
Will carry me through to...

Heaven... I'm in heaven,
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak.
And I seem to find the happiness I seek,
When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek.

In a big glass shell in UCL there lies Jeremy Bentham’s head
With his 2 glass eyes just slightly surprised, as if he’s just realised he’s dead
The case is locked with 5 separate keys
2 you turn simultaneously
Just in case some UCL student tries to roll him around again

But back in his heyday, each day was like a payday
He lived so large they let him live on in his own way
That when death should come he’d be turned into a mummy
And put out on show like a tailor’s dummy
But the head got damaged, now it’s leather and red
And if you see what’s stuck on the body instead
Well, it looks more pretty
But it’s still a pity
Because that’s not really Jeremy Bentham’s head

—————————————–

Because the real head tried to find a key to open up the greatest door
And understand this thing called Happiness so we’d be in chains no more
Map it out with logical laws
Single out the logical flaws
I believe that this endeavour is still the greatest of all

And then there’s the vision of Utilitarianism
Felicific Calculus and cleaning up the prisons
A wider vote and an equal share, yeah
Rates laws, state schools, modern underwear, yeah
And that’s just a fraction, a moderate selection
Of ways that he helped to change society’s direction
A drop in the ocean
Of some of the notions
That started life in Jeremy Bentham’s head

—————————————–
But it was 1832 when he began his mortal slumber
And we’re a long way away from that ‘Greatest Happiness for the Greatest Number’
And with each passing year Doubt has trickled like a leak
Until the modern mind is too confused to speak
And our philosophers are up to their eyebrows, swimming in words words words…
—————————————–

Well, we can map out the world to the smallest degree, we can transplant a failing heart
We can travel in space, harness air and sea, we can pull an atom apart
But time goes on and still I see
Happiness is a mystery
What it is, how it fits together, well, we don’t even know where to start…

But we must start somewhere, or else we’ll end up nowhere
If we don’t make the effort then we’re never going to get there
I can’t just wait and leave it all to chance that
A man like Bentham will give me all the answers
Perhaps he had his own map laid outspread
Before he took his little detour to the land of the dead, but hey
I’ll never get it
I might as well forget it
Because it’s all locked up in Jeremy Bentham’s head

Now some folks say a tramp won't steal
But I caught three in my corn field.

I'm on my way, I'm goin' back to Alabam'.

One had a bushel and the other had a peck
One had a roast'n' ear tied round his neck.

I'm on my way, I'm goin back to Alabam'.

It's not that I'm so cheerful, though I'll always raise a smile
And if at times my nonsense rhymes, then I'll stand trial
My friends are all around me, but they only breathe through fear
Were I to cry, I'm sure that still they'd never see a tear

In darkness through my being here, away from you
The bright light of your star confronts me, shining through

Dull and sullen, much subdued, my skull a stony glaze
Whirlpools rage on constantly, I'm not so well these days
There must be something somewhere near, who sees what's being done
The harbour lights are burning bright, my wax is almost run

In darkness through my being here, away from you
The bright light of your star confronts me, shining through

Come Lollard, raise your lute and sing and to my ears her beauty bring
Like Maddox in the days of old, we'll feast and drink until we fold
And folding, still we'll spare a thought
For what's been lost and what's been caught
And maybe then begin again for love is life, not poison

In darkness through my being here, away from you
The bright light of your star confronts me, shining through

“The girls in New York City, they all march for women's lib

And Better Homes & Gardens shows the modern way to live

And the pill may change the world tomorrow, but meanwhile, today

Here in Topeka, the flies are a buzzin'

The dog is a barkin' and the floor needs a scrubbin'

One needs a spankin' and one needs a huggin'

Lord, one's on the way“

There's no way out of here
When you come in
You're in for good
There was no promise made
The part you played
The chance you took
There are no boundaries set
The time and yet
You waste it still
So it slips through your hands
Like grains of sand
You watch it go
There's no time to be lost
You'll pay the cost
So get it right
There's no way out of here
When you come in
You're in for good
There never was an answer
There an answer
Not without listening
Without seeing
There are no answers here
When you look out
You don't see in
There was no promise made
The part you played
The chance you took
There's no way out of here
When you come in
You're in for good
There never was an answer
There an answer
Not without listening
Without seeing
There's no way out of here
When you come in
You're in for good
There are no answers here
When you look out
You don't see in
There was no promise made
The part you played
The chance you took
(When you come in)
(You're in for good)
