Original Broadway Cast - High Spirits (1964)

This one was nominated for a Best Musical Tony. No way was it going to beat "Hello, Dolly!" but Noel Coward's charming tale of a haunted husband offers simple pleasures of its own. Among them are Beatrice Lillie, Tammy Grimes and some great love songs.

Original Broadway Casts - This Is The Army (1942)/Texas, Li'l Darlin' (1949)/Call Me Mister (1946) (Sepia 2002)

Three on one CD, originally released on 78 RPM (!) albums.

Original Broadway Cast - She Loves Me (1964)

This one, starring Barbara Cook, lost the Best Musical Tony to Hello, Dolly! Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick came roaring back the following season with Fiddler On The Roof. Quite a comeback, if you ask me.

Original Broadway Cast - Fiddler On The Roof (1964)

So many superlatives have already flowed for 1965's richly deserving Tony winner that there's not much I can add. Zero Mostel was made for the part of Tevye but everyone is superb and the music is truly memorable.

I saw it performed at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. This musical has it all. In short, perfection. :cheer:

Original Broadway Cast - Golden Boy (1964)

This adaptation of a bleak Clifford Odets tragedy was nominated for a Best Musical Tony but, predictably, lost to the cheerful Fiddler On The Roof. As a vehicle for Sammy Davis, Jr., it shows the man as a larger than life entertainer.

Earl Robinson & Waldo Salt - Sandhog (1956)

Vinyl Rip Of The Day.

Sandhog-11-54-1.jpg

Vanguard Records began the long-running 9000 series of 12-inch long players in 1956 as a "Theatre Showcase" series. After nine releases, the series turned to folk music with "The Weavers At Carnegie Hall" and never looked back to the stage.

The very first release is a genuine rarity. "Sandhog" was a folk opera that lasted just 48 performances at the Phoenix, an Off Broadway theater. Based on a Theodore Dreiser story, it presents the tragic tale of an Irish immigrant who worked on the first tunnel project under the Hudson River in the 1880's. The plot bears more than a passing resemblance to that of Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John", including the name of the doomed excavator.

Future television stalwarts Jack Cassidy and Alice Ghostley featured prominently in the cast but this record offers only the two composers, Waldo Salt as narrator and Earl Robinson singing and playing piano. Both men were blacklisted at the time they wrote this musical. Salt was a screenwriter who turned to Broadway after he refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Years later he would earn Oscars for Midnight Cowboy and Coming Home. Robinson was also a card-carrying Communist songwriter who had written the familiar folk anthem "Joe Hill" as well as "Ballad For Americans", a patriotic cantata.

This LP is widely considered to be the rarest Broadway recording and has never been released on CD. I was lucky enough to find a promo copy with a plain white cover. Although this album doesn't exactly qualify as folk music, it certainly fulfills the progressive agenda that the Solomon Brothers held for their record label.

Original Broadway Cast - Chicago (1975)

Unlike Mrs. Ojai, I hated the movie but the Broadway cast album is stunning. I guess there really is a difference between genuine sparkle and mere dazzle. In my book, Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera beat Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones any day of the week.

Original Broadway Cast - Half A Sixpence (1965)

This Tommy Steele vehicle imported from London was a surprise Tony nominee. A very young John Cleese met Terry Gilliam while performing in this show.
