Abe Burrows - The Girl With The Three Blue Eyes and Other Typical Type Songs (Decca 10" LP, 1950)

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

Abe Burrows (1910-1985) succeeded without really trying (well, probably he did try) on radio, television and especially Broadway. Wiki enumerates his notable accomplishments on The Great White Way:

Eventually, Burrows wrote, doctored, or directed such shows as Make a Wish, Two on the Aisle, Three Wishes for Jamie, Say, Darling, Guys and Dolls, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Cactus Flower, Four on a Garden, Can-Can, Silk Stockings, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Good News (1974 revival), and many others.

Although not as widely known, Abe's few forays into recording were also highly entertaining. He pioneered the style of humorous spoken introductions to witty topical songs with piano later adopted by Tom Lehrer. Tokyo Rose, gardening, hospitals and natural parks, among other equally varied and unexpected subjects, come under his scrutiny.

Grigory Solokov - Chopin: 24 Préludes (Opus 28) - Paris 17 Juin 1990 (2001)

June 17, 1990 is a cool Spring day in Paris. Having just enjoyed dinner in a little bistro on the Left Bank, we head over to the Salle Adyar, a charming 1912 art nouveau theater devoted to classical music.

This evening, we will enjoy a recital by Grigory Sokolov, a Russian pianist whose work is well known in Europe but less so in the United States perhaps for political reasons. The centerpiece of the evening is his performance of Chopin's 24 Preludes, a pianistic iron man triathlon loaded with dazzling changes of mood, tempo and volume to challenge the best artists. Sokolov acquits himself masterfully, leaving the audience enthralled by his intimate reading presented in this most sympathetic venue.

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

The final album from the battling brothers was released shortly after both had died. The Dorseys broke up their highly successful band in 1935 and reunited twenty years later when Jimmy, beset with health problems, folded his own orchestra and joined Tommy.
