The Statler Brothers - Country & Western Classics (comp. 1983)

Ni04MTIxLmpwZWc.jpeg

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

Time-Life did a great job compiling box sets with material licensed from all of the major labels even before the advent of the compact disc. Their "Country & Western Classics" series triple LP sets included both historical and contemporary artists, presented in high quality sound with illustrated booklets. Their Statler Brothers anthology covers everything from their first failed Columbia single through their later run of hits on Mercury. It still stands as the ideal collection for anyone who wants more than a single disc "greatest hits" and less than the big 3 CD "30th Anniversary".

The Cleveland Quartet - Two American Masterpieces (Barber: String Quartet / Ives: String Quartet No. 2) (1976)

Verily, this album's title speaketh the truth. These two edgy, stimulating pieces would be comfortable on a program with works by any of their European confreres. The masterful young Clevelanders bring out all of the sustained excitement these delightful pieces have to offer.

Songs with "night" in the title, on random ... was surprised this kicked off with two songs (at the bottom of my list) with the exact same title. Usually I allow these to play through to the end of the list but not this time. "Night" is a popular word in song titles and I had 341 songs (29hours 31 minutes) turn up in this list. I let it run for a couple of hours

I ended up continuing to listen to the "night" playlist while I worked on the computer through the morning. Let me just say I heard many versions of "Round Midnight" and "A Night in Tunisia"!!!!! Like a lot a lot. :worm:
Not necessarily a bad thing, but, yeah, a lot.

With 29 hours though, you may never get to "Saturday Nite" by Earth, Wind & Fire (which, come to think of it might never come up base on "night" search") or "Ladies Night" by Kool & The Gang

I do like the Bruce entries though :)

Dave Clark Five - Glad All Over Again: All-Time Greatest Hits (rec. 1964-70, Epic comp. 1975)

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

While I wait for The Liverbirds CD to arrive (thanks, @Nickyboy), I am spinning the DC5 from an album I bought new back in the day. The London group was one of the biggest of the British Invasion acts, the second one to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. But they missed the boat completely on the digital era because Dave declined to license their recordings between 1978 and 1993. This 2-LP collection was and still is a terrific way to enjoy their output, with all 17 of their top ten singles plus some rare B-sides, all in pristine mono just as God intended.

Van Morrison - Catalog Strays (1965-2000) (ROIO 2010)

While I was in the vault digging (out) Dave Clark, I ran across this one which I acquired long ago in a plain brown wrapper from under the counter at CD Banzai in WeHo. Those resourceful devils at Scorpio assembled a three CD collection of rarities from Van The Man: uncollected singles, b-sides, unreleased cuts, soundtracks, even some pairings with the likes of John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf and Frank Zappa.
