What are you reading?

John Ridley - Stray Dogs

A third of the way through this and wishing I was done with it. It's not bad. It's just not that good.

This is the book that became the movie "U-Turn". This is the author that became a Hollywood screenwriter (12 Years A Slave, and Three Kings) and director (Jimi: All Is By My Side). Not to mention he's moonlighted by writing a few comic book series that I liked.

I remember liking his next novel more. Maybe this will become a more enjoyable read to me. If not, I'll still roll through it. It's not bad and it's short, so that will help. It's just that I'd rather read something ... better.

Fletch (1974) by Gregory McDonald

First time reading McDonald. Also not a big Chevy Chase fan so never saw the movie (which I hear is different anyway). Really got a kick out of this. Fun, irreverent take on the Chandlerian tropes of the gumshoe (in this case investigative reporter).

:hug:I thought I was the only one who didn't get the fuss about Chase.

I haven't read anything by Gregory McDonald, but I've been intrigued by the reviews I've read. Maybe one day I'll get around to it. Let us know what you think of it when you finish.

Victor LaValle - The Ballad of Black Tom

when he delivers an occult tome to a reclusive sorceress in the heart of Queens, Tom opens a door to a deeper realm of magic, and earns the attention of things best left sleeping.

The Night Train by Clyde Edgerton

Edgerton is revered local novelist that I've intended to read for years, but never did. I happened upon this at the library on the Books For Sale rack, and decided that for $3, a coming-of-age tale of two teenage boys in 1963 North Carolina, one who loved James Brown and one who loved Thelonius Monk, might just be the perfect first contact with Mr Edgerton.

This is a phenomenal book. I don't know how good the rest of his catalog is, but I'll certainly be in line for another read one day.

Affections by Rodrigo Hasbún

Story of a German family living in South America in the 60s and 70s, parents and three daughters, each chapter narrated by a different family member or extended family members. I should complete it today, and I am very happy I stumbled across this a couple of weeks ago.
