Acclaimed Music Top 5000 Songs

f) Every time I hear "Chattanooga Choo Choo" I always think of this bad joke/pun from when I was a kid involving a cat stealing Roy Rogers boots (punchline "Pardon me, Roy, is that the cat who chewed your new shoes" is really bad but impossible to forget).

Hmm... apparently not entirely impossible to forget.

"Chase" by Giorgio Moroder. That was from Flashdance, IIRC. An instrumental number, but I choose not to listen to it again, voluntarily.

Yes...that would make more sense as a pun on the song

Although, if my memory serves me correct, I still think I was told the joke as "stole" not "chewed"...could I have been told the joke incorrectly by some misguided but well-meaning jokester.
More than likely, I just misremembered - it was 40 years ago after all

And speaking of misremembering - "Chase" is from Midnight Express, not Flashdance (hey, only 5 years off, but a very different film) ;)

I stand dissected. :Matt:

4517) "Cuando pase el temblor" by Soda Stereo (1985)
4516) "Slow Death" by Flamin' Groovies (1972)

Thoughts:
a) Wow! What are the chances?! Two Soda Stereo songs within 32 songs. The Argentine band scores big here
b) Songs I'm delighted to see here: Billy Bragg's "Between the Wars", "Nite Klub" by The Specials, "Baby Workout" by Jackie Wilson
c) artists I'm ALWAYS happy to see here: Flamin' Groovies, Rodriguez (how great to hear the song when it popped up) - I suspect there will be more by both further up down the road
d) songs that I "get" why they're here but I'm kind of meh about: "Walk Like an Egyptian", "Ben", dare I say "Truckin'"
e) there's a few late 90s/early 2000s U2 popping up on recent lists (I'm behind on posting c/w listening (what else is new) but you'll see) - there are fans but it's just a fallow period for the band IMO
f) "I Think We're Alone Now" is a gem of pop goodness that I feel should be higher (certainly higher than U2's "Staring at the Sun")
g) good to see Shack here. Their 1999 album H.M.S. Fable is good stuff
h) Johnny Thunders is one of those guitarist whose sound I love. In another life where I'm an aspiring late 70s guitarist, I would emulate Thunders guitar playing (Tom Verlaine too for that matter)...I would not, however, emulate Thunders predilection for heroin (among other drugs)

4537) "Just Walkin' In the Rain" by The Prisonaires (1953)

Great to see that one of Sun Records' pre-Elvis hits made the grade.

Road Trip allowed some nice movement on my Acclaimed Songs list. Try to catch up in small increments:

4515) "Carry, Go, Bring, Home" by Justin Hinds & The Dominoes (1964)
4514) "The Distance" by Cake (1996)
4513) "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" by U2 (2000)
4512) "Lover I Don't Have to Love" by Bright Eyes (2002)
4511) "Teenage FBI" by Guided by Voices (1999)
4510) "Hacker" by Death Grips (2012)
4509) "In/Flux" by DJ Shadow and the Groove Robbers (1993)
4508) "Pay to Cum" by Bad Brains (1980)
4507) "How Long" by Ace (1974)
4506) "Silent All These Years" by Tori Amos (1991)
4505) "Changes" by Sugar (1992)
4504) "I Get Money" by 50 Cent (2007)
4503) "Fantastic Voyage" by Coolie (1994)
4502) "Blue Moon" by Beck (2014)
4501) "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect" by The Decemberists (2002)
4500) "Sweet Virginia" by The Rolling Stones (1972)
4499) "Pearl" by Chapterhouse (1991)
4498) "Rather Be" by Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne (2014)
4497) "Bologna" by Wanda (2014)
4496) "Massachusetts" by Bee Gees (1967)
4495) "Cold, Cold Heart" by Tony Bennett (1951)

Lots of good songs (good to see the Decemberists get some love; love "Sweet Virginia" off Exile) but tough to get the smooth 70s "How long...has this been going on" out of my head.

Nicest surprise - had never heard the Austrian band Wanda's "Bologna" (and don't understand the lyrics at all) but boy is it catchy

Next up:
4494) "Freak on a Leash" by Korn (1998)
4493) "Time in A Bottle" by Jim Croce (1972)
4492) "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian (1975)
4491) "Rip Groove" by Double 99 (1997)
4490) "I Walk The Earth" by King Biscuit Time (2000)
4489) "The New Pollution" by Beck (1996)

4485) "The World Is Yours" by Nas (1994)
4484) "War on the East Coast" by The New Pornographers (2014)
4483) "Leave them All Behind" by Ride (1992)
4482) "Paradise by The Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf (1977)
4481) "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (1980)
4480) "Map Ref. 41 Deg. N 93 Deg. West" by Wire (1979)
4479) "Hang Me Up to Dry" by Cold War Kids (2006)
4478) "Happy Birthday' by Altered Images (1981)
4477) "Party Doll" by Buddy Knox (1956)
4476) "Getting Better" by The Beatles (1967)
4475) "The Stranger Song" by Leonard Cohen (1967)

Thoughts:
a) both Beck and the Stones show up twice in two adjacent lists
b) the bombastic rock of Bat Out of Hell is a guilty pleasure, but the most known song "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" (despite the presence of the Scooter, Phil Rizutto) is perhaps my least favorite song on the album - not bad, fun..just like the others more. Still, it's the most known song and here it is at 4482. Sadly, not sure the other songs on the album are gonna score higher.
c) Several well known songs here - the "I Would've Thought It Would Show Up Higher" award, in my mind, split between "Time In A Bottle" and Leonard Cohen's "The Stranger Song"
d) "At Seventeen" is a quiet, sublime song
e) I enjoy how the list includes a lot of these 50s-60s oldies like Lloyd Price's "Personality" (last list) and Buddy Knox's "Party Doll" that are fun, bouncy, appropriately ranked, but deserve not to be forgotten amidst the artsier fare
f) I personally sing licks of The Beatles "Getting Better" all the time (:D), but hey there's a ton of deserving Beatles songs. Some of them are gonna show up down here

Man, to quote Night Ranger, "I'm Motoring":

4474) "Halfway to a Threeway" by Jim O'Rourke (1999)
4473) "Smokey Joe's Cafe" by The Robins (1955)
4472) "Gangsta Gangsta" by N.W.A. (1988)
4471) "Sue (or In A Season of Crime)" by David Bowie (2014)
4470) "19" by Paul Hardcastle (1985)
4469) "Never Stop" by Echo & the Bunnymen (1983)
4468) "Sara" by Fleetwood Mac (1979)
4467) "Near You" by Francis Craig Orchestra (1947)
4466) "Distant Sun" by Crowded House (1993)
4465) "Till I Die" by The Beach Boys (1971)
4464) "Eight Miles Die" by Husker Du (1984)
4463) "Richard III" by Supergrass (1997)
4462) "Jailbreak" by Thin Lizzy (1976)
4461) "Lip Gloss" by Lil Mama (2007)
4460) "The Promise" by Bruce Springsteen (1999)
4459) "Happy House" by The Juan MacLean (2008)
4458) "Bang Zoom (Let's Go Go Go)" by The Real Roxanne (1986)
4457) "Teach Your Children" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young (1970)
4456) "Random Rules" by Silver Jews (1998)
4455) "Ride A White Swan" by T.Rex (1970)

Thoughts:
a) "Smokey Joe's Cafe" - nice song by The Robins (who would become the Coasters)
b) "The Promise" is a lesser known Springsteen song recorded but never released with Darkness on the Edge of Town but would come out on the Tracks boxed set in 1999. Tremendous, among Bruce's best "unreleased" songs
c) in the mid-80s, I definitely was into the fun hip hop that came out then. Definitely remember UTFO's "Roxanne, Roxanne" and the reply songs that ensued. Knew "The Real Roxanne" but had not heard of "Bang Zoom" which charted in the UK
d) "Till I Die" - nice selection off Surf's Up
e) I remember when Paul Hardcastle's "19" charted and was on the radio and didn't like it at all...and I still don't enjoy it (though I have never forgotten that the average age of the soldier in Vietnam was n-n-n-n-nineteen)
f) Husker Du has many deserving songs that are bound to pop up on this list. Not sure their cover of The Byrds' "Eight Miles High" brings that much to the table that it deserves to be here

One More List? Why Not!:
4454) "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)" by U2 (1993)
4453) "Osez Josephine" by Alain Bashung (1991)
4452) "If I Can Dream" by Elvis Presley (1968)
4451) "California Stars" by Billy Bragg & Wilco (1998)
4450) "B.Y.O.B" by System of A Down (2005)
4449) "I Wanna Be Loved By You" by Helen Kane (1928)
4448) "Honey" by Moby (1998)
4447) "Natalia's Song" by Zomby (2011)

4445) "Tombe pour la France" by Etienne Daho (1985)
4444) "Well All Right" by Buddy Holly (1958)
4443) "Listen to the Music" by The Doobie Brothers (1972)
4442) "Ruff Ryders Anthem" by DMX (1998)
4441) "He's Sure the Boy I Love" by The Crystals (1962)
4440) "The Love You Save" by The Jackson 5 (1970)
4439) "Schrapnell" by Isolee (2005)
4438) "Cars & Girls" by Prefab Sprout (1988)
4437) "What Is and What Should Never Be" by Led Zeppelin (1969)
4436) "My Silver Lining" by First Aid Kit (2014)
4435) "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles (1988)

Thoughts:
a) Helen Kane's (who became the "Boop-Boop-A-Doop Girl" from this song) voice was the inspiration for Betty Boop
b) "If I Can Dream"was the highpoint of NBC's '68Comeback Special and was recorded 2 months after Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination. Elvis belts out the finale and, while it might not be to everyone's style, I would put it higher
c) "California Stars", originally written (but never recorded) by Woody Guthrie, is part of Billy Bragg & Wilco's outstanding collaboration Mermaid Avenue celebrating Guthrie's work
d) The Crystals! Love that early 60s "girl group" sound
e) Really enjoy the low-key alt.countrish vibe of the First Aid Kit number. I'll add the video:

4408) "Secret Agent Man" by Johnny Rivers (1966)
4407) "Sunday Girl" by Blondie (1978)

Thoughts
a) Some well known are REALLY good songs here (yeah...and "I Believe I Can Fly" made it too)
b) Biggest Surprise It's Down Here So Low: "Carry On Wayward Son" - yes, it's even today overplayed by rock radio, but it has had such staying power.
c) Kansas aside, I'd definitely put "Louisiana 1927" up there (my current state of residence aside) - powerful song about the 1927 flood that took on greater significance post-Katrina. Chuck Berry's "You Can Never Tell" is pretty great too (and was used for the twist competition in the film Pulp Fiction)
d) Two Velvets songs - both simple rock numbers off their debut with "There She Goes Again" using that classic Marvin Gay "Hitch Hike" beat.
e) X-Ray Spex - some may forget them today but pretty darn good punk group atypical a) because of their female lead singer and b) because of the use of saxophone in punk
f) The horribly parenthesized but wonderful (There's) Always Something There to Remind Me Is Here. British singer Sandie Shaw's 1964 was earlier than the better known (in the U.S.) Dionne Warwick cover, but was not the original (that honor goes to Lou Johnson, released months before Shaw's version). Of course, there's also the 1980s Naked Eyes cover.
g) there was a brief time when very young, I thought Johnny Rivers was singing "Secret Asian Man"...

4368) Happy Xmas (War is Over)" by John Lennon & Yoko Ono (1971)

Feel free to peruse this song list and comment. Gonna try to post a few more lists this weekend. Lots of typing - not many comments
I will say that "Twistin' the Night Away" is a tremendous surprise this low....for me "Love Hurts" as well - beautiful rendition though Roy Orbinson's and The Everly Brothers versions may come up further on up the road
One day I'll learn the words for "One Week"...yadda yadda...Chinese chicken
I wish ShallowGal posted still so that she could show outrage and counter my comment that The National is one of the most boring bands on the Planet. So much that I didn't want to end my list with their song "Graceless" and added two more song to end with "Happy Xmas" - hey there's Christmas commercials popping up already on TV so why not. Plus I hear we're saying "Merry Christmas" again ;)

4341) "The Ballad of John and Yoko" by The Beatles (1969)
4340) "It's A Shame" by The Spinners (1970)

Thoughts:
a) I am a man who shamelessly and nostalgically loves 80s pop so if I'm not crazy about an 80s song, it doesn't belong on this list (sensible logic, right?). I just find "One Thing Leads to Another" ordinary but I'll allow it. On the other hand, does anyone in the world like "Mexican Radio" when they're sober?!
b) Tom Petty's "Breakdown :(
c) I joined the MG in 2009 and immediately picked up several albums in rotation there at that time. My enjoyment of these continue to this today so I'm happy to see "You've Got the Love" by Florence + The Machine here
d) I really enjoy the Taylor Swift song here. I mean...it's no "Shake It Off" or "I Knew You Were Trouble" but hey, plenty of room for those higher up
e) "Watermelon Man" - fun-kay! Can "Rubberband Man" be far behind
f) For a classic rock fan (and I've mentioned this before), it always surprises me that the Band leaves me a bit cold (especially as I really dig Dylan) but I do enjoy "Across the Great Divide"

4300) "There Stands the Glass" by Webb Pierce (1953)
4299) "Matchbox" by Carl Perkins (1957)

Thoughts:
a) Some interesting coincidental repeat artists - two George Michael songs within 10 songs. Also Bright Eyes and Gerry and the Pacemakers have had other numbers very close.
b) Speaking of the Pacemakers, "You'll Never Walk Alone" is a Broadway number from Rogers and Hammerstein's Carousel
c) I will forever now link "O-o-h Child" with Chris Pratt's dance-off at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy
d) Santo and Johnny's "Sleep Walk" - great early rock guitar instrumental
e) OutKast - I quote this song a decent amount of times surprisingly
f) The Platters - just beautiful
g) my oldest son sometimes breaks out Solomon Burke....so proud.
h) Aw..."Funky Kingston" down here in the 4000's. One of my fave reggae numbers

Quite the rush of posts in this thread - why? First, my wife's out of town so have time for some late night posting. Second, I'm actually up to listening (as of today) to #4074 today so I feel the need to catch up. So close - really wanna get to the 3000s. I actually really wanna get to the 1000s
Actually have an idea for a song list of my own (and perhaps a thread to accompany it). Still enjoying this series but I'm going far slower than I hoped initially.

Is there any justification for why you have slagged on your posting to this avidly-watched thread, Zeebster?

I mean... other than being guest conductor somewhere, having your first dusting of snow, using the cranial screw-top surgery of Dr. Hfuhruhurr successfully for the first time, despite repeated tries, and maybe some fallback excuses regarding wife and family, what could it possibly be? :duel::boohoo:

You're right, Axo - how could I have left this thread behind. Initially my goal was to play these playlists every time I went to the gym. Sadly, I have not been going to the gym lately though (and my waistline shows it :()

As I posted on a nearby thread though, not digging any albums lately, so may be picking up this thread again (to alternate with my Christmas music listening).
Now that I know someone is watching ;) I have inspiration to post more:thumbsup:
