Cover Songs- Can they be good?

I had a thought for a similar thread, only a few days ago, while out driving. I'm delighted you acted on it.

Now, if I could only remember what song it was that triggered my thought.

Thinka thinka thinka....

For two covers that exceeded the impact of the originals, look no further than Elvis Presley's first single.

Elvis married the salacious electric blues of Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup

to Bill Monroe's straitlaced hillbilly waltz

to create something both different and similar to each.

The influence of Elvis even extended back to Monroe himself. Less than two months after Sun 209 was released, Bill rushed into the studio for a highly unusual one-song session. There he re-recorded "Blue Moon Of Kentucky", ditching the old waltz time after a few seconds in favor of Presley's uptempo rhythm.
