L
k.d. Lang-
Engenue (1992)
While Lang's first albums were decidedly more country style, "Engenue" found her exploring a slightly different sound. Sure, there are still twangy guitars to be hear here, but in combination with lush strings. The songs on this album are less about life on the farm in Canada, and more introspective. Lang has a sultry voice that is full of power and tender sentimentality at the same time. This album shows Lang's more atmospheric and dreamy side. I saw her for this tour at the Tower Theater in Philly, 8th row center and was blown away by her performance.
Highlights include the radio hit "Constant Craving" and my favorite, "Save Me" (best played loudly through good speakers or headphones)
Lightning Seeds-
Sense (1992)
Well, this album certainly wins the "Ugliest Cover Art" award, as far as I am concerned. That said, the music on this disc is wonderful. It is a textbook example of early 90s, jangly, lush, Britpop. Don't go into this one expecting anything deep. You won't find it. This is pure, sweet pop and doesn't pose itself as anything else. And we can all use some cheeriness in our lives every now and then. Axo has been known to play this while brushing his teeth on Sunday mornings. It's true.
Lots of hits on here (in England more so than the US). Highlights for me include "Tingle Tangle" and "Marooned".
Loop Guru-
Duniya (1995)
Surprise, surprise! Another album in Nickyboy's collection that sounds like something he found at the souk in Tangiers. This disc is probably my favorite of Loop Guru's. It is a mix of ambient tribal, dub, and trance full of looping beats and foreign tongues. This isn't everyone's cup of tea, and it might take a spin or two for it to click with you, but overall it is a beautiful album. If you are familiar with Transglobal Underground, you already have a sense of what Loop Guru brings to the (turn)table. And for those of you that want an extended trip session, the final track, "The Third Chamber, Part IV" clocks in at 21:49. Maybe it will help with your insomnia.
Highlights include "Bangdad" and "Through Cinemas" (no pretty pictures in the video. enjoy the void).
