Radioooo- Music from around the world, throughout time.

I was recently reminded of a site I found a while back called Radioooo. Click on any country in the world (as long as it is highlighted on the map) and then pick a decade and tracks from that country and that country will play. Tracks have been uploaded by users, so the US and Europe are more heavily loaded than Russia and the East, but there are surprising finds there too. Give it a try and see what you find. I have enjoyed England from the 1920s-40s and more recent tracks from the Scandinavian countries.

I could have really used that site when I was reading "No Longer At Ease" by Achebe and "Half Of A Yellow Sun" by Adiche. Written 50 years apart, both speak often of High Life music in Nigeria during the 60s and 70s. Reading those books made me lament that I couldn't experience the music with the characters. I definitely have to utilize that site to hear those songs now.

I can imagine listening to this site while I read other books set in other countries during different decades.

I've actually thought of having a get together centered around a certain year - music and dress of the year, then after some socializing and eating, sitting down and watching some TV shows and movies of that year.

As I said, I've THOUGHT about it - no such party has ever surfaced

You missed your calling of becoming an historian, with a specialty in music.

Today I selected Argentina in the 1940's as the soundtrack to the Ralph Peer bio I'm reading. He went to Argentina in 1942 with Walt Disney as part of the U.S. Government's good neighbor outreach that resulted in Joe Carioca, the obnoxious parrot. Radioooo gave me an Oscar Aleman guitar record and some interesting dance bands. I can see this will be a very enlightening site. Thanks, Nick!

I hadn't thought of using it as a soundtrack to what you are doing, but that is a perfect application! Cooking Italian tonight? Let's listen to Italy 1950s! Trying on kimonos for your Japanese friend's wedding? Japan 1960s! Feeling downtrodden by Capitalism? Russia 1970s!

I was listening to Switzerland yesterday afternoon and it was interesting to hear, as I moved up through the decades, how the music went from "traditional" to more rock and rock. But even in the 50s and 60s, there were still very traditional elements tucked into their rock tracks. Btw, there was one band (The Shiver? I forget) that had unbelievably proggy instrumental music. Quite good. I am going to try to find them again.

Having a root canal? Listen to Panama!
