RIP - Music related

Baker moved to Nigeria in 1971 and set up the Batakota recording studio in Lagos, which hosted local musicians as well as established stars (McCartney’s band Wings recorded part of Band on the Run there). He performed with Nigerian star Fela Kuti – “he understands the African beat more than any other westerner,” said Kuti’s drummer Tony Allen – and went on to collaborate or perform with a hugely varied array of musicians: Public Image Ltd, Hawkwind, hard rock band Baker Gurvitz Army, and jazz performers Max Roach, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones. In 1994, he formed a jazz trio with Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell.
I didn't know the half of that.
That wickedness perhaps included his notorious temper – “I used to be mean – I’d deliberately mess up recording sessions with my temper and go mad at the slightest thing,” he said in 1970. He was married four times – “If a plane went down and there was one survivor, it would be Ginger. The devil takes care of his own,” first wife Elizabeth Ann Baker said in 2009 – and used heroin on and off since the mid-60s: he told the Guardian in 2013 that he relapsed “something like 29 times”.
:(

Imma try hard not to be remembered quite like that.

This is very sad news. Not too long ago I started working through Ginger's entire discography and was totally blown away with his versatility and curiosity over the years. I am about to post in the Lost Classics thread (which itself seems to have gotten lost) one of his most revelatory albums.

Mrs. Ojai plays Korean changgo drums. One day I was playing "Toad" and she came running in and exclaimed: "Hey, he just played a sequence from my current lesson!"

He stole lessons from Korean changgo drums for "Toad"?

It happens. In college I took a class on Balinese music (both the hard and soft gamelan!!). We learned in class one day about the temporal cycle. I went back to my room and put on Brian Eno's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts". Lo and behold, the last track, "Mountain of Needles", follows the temporal cycle perfectly. It had always been my favorite track for the lazy, hazy feel with moments of built up crescendo, but didn't know why. Well, you can thank the temporal cycle for that.

Wig Wiggins was the American representative of the International Club Crosby for many years. In this role, he managed membership, wrote a major discography, co-produced a massive series of CDs comprising Bing's complete recordings, and took care of the million and one other details necessary for a fan club to succeed. I never met Wig personally but he was always a joy to deal with. Apart from his love of the Old Groaner, Wig had a fascinating life, as the obit shows.

Alas, poor Frontis (Wig). I never knew him, Horatio.

Neil Inness, Monty Python collaborator/songwriter and founder of the Rutles has passed away: https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-50948921

bummer. :(

Not to mention his work in the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. Remember in college perusing the Rolling Stone Album Guide, seeing the good rating for their album Gorilla, and going on a hunt for it. Still get a kick out of that one. Innes had such a unique humor.
In musical connections, we have him to than for Death Cab for Cutie's name (taken from a Bonzo... song title)
