Mel was a true Renaissance man: singer, songwriter, comedian, publisher and fisherman. He did a masterful job over the decades of adapting to the changing world of country music without compromising his down home sincerity.

Never really listened to him much (though "I Think I Love You" is wonderful pop candy from the era) but The Partridge Family was a frequently watched syndicated show of my youth. A friend about 7 years older than me was quite sad when he went into critical condition. As a teen she "loved" Cassidy, and who's not saddened when an idealistic part of youth dies.

My experience with David was the opposite, @Zeeba Neighba . I never watched the show but listened to their records quite a bit. Of course buying them damaged my credibility at The Wherehouse in much the same way as Bobby Sherman.

Thanks, @axolotl. I missed this.

Avakian was responsible for a lot of great music over the years. For good or ill, he pioneered the use of tape editing to assemble perfect performances. He even went so far as to replace the actual live recordings of Duke Ellington's vital 1956 set at Newport with studio remakes because all the audience noise was so distracting.

No cause of death was given, but the musician had been beset by health problems in recent years; in 2015 he was sidelined after losing the use of his right hand and arm following a pair of falls that incurred serious nerve damage.

It needs to be said - Much Too Young.
