Vienna Philharmonic (Karl Bohm, cond.) - Strauss Waltzes and Polkas (1973)
To American ears, Strauss waltzes can sound corny but Austrian Karl Bohm and the Vienna Phil give them the seriously majestic, nay, imperial treatment they deserve.
Do either the conductor or the composer look like they're fooling around with campy cliches? Nein!

Gewandhausorchester Leipzig (Kurt Masur, cond.) - Brahms: Symphony No. 1 (1976)
Masur was director of the Leipzig Orchestra for nearly 30 years. He clearly had a strong feel for this rousing Romantic symphony and for Brahms in general. He wound up recording the complete cycle of the composer's orchestral music with this ensemble, which was released as an outstanding 8 CD set under Decca's Eloquence imprint.
