Two beautifully recorded theater performances by Dave, Paul Desmond, Paul Crotty and Lloyd Davis. The Wilshire Ebell Theatre has been operated since 1927 by the Ebell of Los Angeles, a women's club dedicated to female education. It is a charming 1300 seat venue that has hosted everyone from Amelia Earhart to Glenn Gould.

Emma Kirkby, Judith Nelson, Patrizia Kwella, Academy of Ancient Music (Christopher Hogwood, dir.) - Handel: Italian Cantatas / Music For The Alchymist (rec. 1981-82, comp. 1991))

MDctODkyOC5qcGVn.jpeg

Everyone knows The Messiah, but Handel wrote lots of vocal music outside the oratorio form. This diverse compilation gathers two Cantatas, three Duetti, a Trio, and two pieces of theatre music. The Cantatas feature the sublime sopranos Emma Kirkby and Judith Nelson with a string trio. The remaining pieces present the also fine Patrizia Kwella and the full Academy of Ancient Music, "with authentic instruments" as the cover reminds us in four different languages. In any language this is a highly entertaining program, full of the expressive vocals and rich instrumental textures Handel is justly known for. Christopher Hogwood and his all star team perform on instruments dating from 1560 to 1787.
