Lucille Ball et al. - Mame (soundtrack 1974, Rhino Handmade 2003)

Merciful heavens, didn't Lucy have any friends to stop her from doing this? Bea Arthur and Robert Preston have nothing to be ashamed of, though.

"The movie spans about 20 years, and seems that long in running time."
-Time Magazine

It seems only Fred and Ethel ever had any sway over her, and that still didn't work out too well.

Or, was it really William Demarest and Vivian Vance?

Actually, Bill Frawley played Fred Mertz. It's a natural mistake, though. Frawley was replaced on My Three Sons by Demarest.

Frawley as "Bub", the boys' maternal grandfather.

Demarest as "Uncle Charlie", Bub's brother.

This change actually occurred before Frawley's death because alcoholism rendered him unreliable as a performer. :(

Baker-Gurvitz Army - Freedom (1995)

Ginger Baker seemed to have an affinity for military names. Wiki tells us about the Baker Gurvitz Army:

When Cream split up in 1968, Ginger Baker was invited to join Blind Faith, which formed the following year. This was not such a successful venture and following its demise, Baker put together his own outfit, Ginger Baker's Air Force, in 1970. Things did not go too well for Baker after the demise of that band. Former The Gun and Three Man Army members, brothers Paul and Adrian Gurvitz were looking for a new way ahead after early successes, so they joined forces with Baker in 1974. In their first year they recorded one live and one studio album, following with two more studio albums, Elysian Encounter and Hearts On Fire. However, the death of their manager led to the band breaking up in 1976.

Freedom presents a 1976 live performance from German radio in both audio and video. Ginger is always well worth listening to, with the 7 minute version of "Memory Lane" the highlight here.

:3.5: on the Sam-O-Meter.

Takashi Hirayasu & Bob Brozman - Jin Jin/Firefly (2001)

TUG1020_900x.jpg

American Slide guitar maven Bob Brozman made a uniformly excellent series of albums with similarly rootsy musicians from all over the world. This collaboration with Okinawan Takashi Hirayasu on the sanshin (a 3 string snakeskin banjo) may be the best of the bunch. It was recorded in a small wooden house on Taketomi, an unspoiled island with 200 inhabitants and no paved roads. The mostly traditional songs are played with primitive intensity. As usual, Brozman steeped himself in these unfamiliar cultural waters so thoroughly that he and Hirayasu seem to share a single soul.

Hey, I just ordered that!
