Schubert's last instrumental composition presents a huge challenge to the erstwhile performer. Its broad emotional range from quiet contemplation to ecstatic exposition requires a deep insight to go along with great technical skill. Mitsuko Uchida, 50 years old when she made this milestone recording, displayed both of these qualities.

I stumbled across this album while browsing the listings of a small Discogs seller disposing of his grandfather's collection. Audio documentaries faded from the scene long ago but I still enjoy the chance to hear contemporary accounts of events from the forgotten past. No one was better qualified than George Jessel to narrate the kaleidoscopic history of American entertainment during the first half of the Twentieth Century. RCA Victor's deep vault provided the actual voices of innumerable big names from Beatrice Lillie to Eddie Fisher.
