Joohyun Park - The Film Music of Michael Nyman (2013)

This one came in a "mystery box" from Buysoundtrax: 30 CD's for $40. Of the four I've spun so far, it's the best. Nyman's film work, the most familiar of which was for "The Piano", is understated if not minimalist. So it benefits from being reduced further to solo piano. There seems to be nothing online about Joohyun Park; even her eponymous website has vanished. She proves herself to be a very subtle interpreter, with a quiet yet intense style that suits the material perfectly. At first I was somewhat put off by the absence of drama, but this album grew on me as time passed, proving the old adage that "everyone listens to a quiet person."

Fotheringay - Nothing More: The Collected Fotheringay (Island comp. 2015)

Three CD's and a DVD tell the all too short story of this legendary group. Both albums with bonus tracks, a live show, the BBC recordings and a solid TV gig from Bremen. Further deponent sayth not. :judge:

^ I will be interested in your final take on this. The top RYM reviews are effusive for this release.

In any event, I plan to listen to it before the weekend.

It's an "EP" that is 1 hour and 29 minutes long.

I like it, but I can't see listening to it many times. Very haunting and poetic. I think you would like it.

Michael Nesmith - And the Hits Just Keep On Coming (1972)

Michael Nesmith - And the Hits Just Keep On Comin' - album cover

Not sure how I didn't know that Nesmith wrote "Different Drum" (done by The Stone Poneys/Linda Ronstadt) -but hey...learning! He performs it on this album.
He wrote it way back in 1964 prior to his Monkees days

Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Blacknuss (1972)

Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Blacknuss - album cover

Should really get back to my chronological Penguin Guide series but that doesn't mean I'm not spinning some interesting jazz albums - this soul jazz album by Kirk is very interesting with covers of "Ain't No Sunshine", "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", "Make It With You", "My Girl", and...."The Old Rugged Cross"???
Some of these arrangements don't work but as a whole, this album cooks...or as the kids say today "slaps" ;)
