Marek Weber - Quiet Music Vol. 5: A Marek Weber Musicale (1952)

NC04MTc1LmpwZWc.jpeg

Vinyl Rip Of The Day.

Marek Weber (1888-1964) was a German orchestra leader known for his lush string arrangements of light classical fare. Being Jewish, he emigrated to the United States in 1933 and became a citizen in 1942. This very early 12 inch LP was largely derived from a 78 r.p.m. album of 5 years earlier.

Weber hated jazz but by popular demand, grudgingly added some to his repertoire. However, according to Wiki "whenever his band launched into a jazz interlude, he would pointedly depart the conductor's podium and get a drink at the bar." :Matt:

I know how just he feels.

Whenever my karaoke-mates break into Nu-Metal, I head for the bar.

Joni James - Let There Be Love (1953)

OS02NTY4LmpwZWc.jpeg

An early concept album, with songs arranged to tell the story of a romance. Rather an abrupt ending if you ask me, but that's the way love goes.

Let There Be Love
My Romance
The Nearness Of You
You're Mine You
You're My Everything
You're Nearer
Love Is Here To Stay
I'll Be Seeing You

Aw... Isn't that the way it goes? First, your money; then your clothes?

I left home on a southbound train
One September in the pouring rain
A midnight flyer and a girl named Lori Rose
Mama said, son it won't last
She'll be gone when you're out of cash
Hey mama, I need a ride back home
All your life you run to love
You give your heart then it's not enough
But hey baby, that's the way it goes
So Romeo in a G.T.O
Met Juliette at the drive-in show
Midnight dreaming down the Texas coast
We stopped to wish upon a star
She stole my breath, she stole my car
But hey baby, it's just the way it goes
Every time that your heart breaks
You swear you won't make the same mistakes
But hey baby, that's the way it goes
First your money, then your clothes
Oh no, love ain't cheap
There's a toll booth up on Lover's Leap
Sweet romance, take a chance
Come and dance with me
I'm riding out on a southbound train
Just a Romeo in the pouring rain
But hey baby, that's the way it goes
First your money, then your clothes

SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden Und Freiburg - Sinfonische Musik - Musiktage Donaueschingen: Uraufführungen 1955-1989 (2000)

MjctNjI5NC5qcGVn.jpeg

This is my first foray into RCA's series devoted to "Musik In Deutschland 1950-2000". Discogs tells us:

"Musik in Germany 1950-2000 outlines the history of contemporary music in Germany during the second half of the twentieth century on a total of 130 CDs. Based on a broadly conceived concept of music, it covers six main areas: concert music, electronic music, music theater, applied music, jazz, and popular music. Within these areas it is subdivided into chronological overviews of particular genres ("series") interspersed with special topics ("portraits")."

This collection brings us a variety of avant garde orchestral music performed by the merry makers at SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden Und Freiburg, conducted by Hans Rosebaud, Michael Gielen and others. The most familiar composer here would be Olivier Messiaen, joined by the lesser known (and equally difficult to pronounce) Iannis Xenakis, Kryzysztof Penderecki, Györdy Ligeti, Heinz Holliger, Helmut Lachenmann and Wolfgang Rihm. I won't pretend that this music is friendly to the ear, but this album shows that Germany in the decades after WWII regained its standing as a world leader in experimental, innovative music.

Jutta Hipp - New Faces, New Sounds From Germany* (1954)

*As Blue Note was wont to do, the album title appears only on the back to avoid interfering with the striking cover art. Note also the cool but inconspicuous font and layout for the mandatory catalog number.

This album brought across the sea a session from April 1954 in Frankfurt credited to "Jutta Hipp and Germany Jazzmen". They fit right in with the Blue Note ethos of creative, melodic post bop. RIYL Sonny Clark.

Looking forward to the Neu!, Kraftwerk, and Karl Heinz Stockhausen discs!
