Benjamin Frith, Northern Sinfonia (David Haslam, cond.) - Field: Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 4 (1999)

I was unfamiliar with Irish composer John Field (1782-1837) until he popped up in 1001 Classical Recordings nestled among Beethoven and Haydn. And you know what? He's not out of place at all. Field invented the nocturne and was very highly regarded among his contemporaries.

These two piano concertos display a depth and maturity that looks forward to the development of the Romantic style rather than backward to the ebullient Mozart. Benjamin Frith performs them with an intimate approach that draws forth every nuance, while the Northern Sinfonia supports him unobtrusively.

on the Sam-O-Meter. Highly recommended.

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

Back in the day, every TV show had to have a memorable theme. Many of them were influenced by jazz, not least this one with its irresistible smoky piano hook. Riddle composed it and two others from this audio tribute to the Vast Wasteland.

on the Sam-O-Meter. Give him an extra half-star for being eclectic enough to pick up "The Alvin Show" and "Sing Along With Mitch".
