Ella Fitzgerald - Lullabies of Birdland (1955)

Ella Fitzgerald - Lullabies of Birdland - album cover

A couple of years ago, Oxford American magazine released a bunch of Spotify playlists in place of its usual CD. The experiment must not have been a success, since they went back to CD's last year.

After I got through being annoyed at the change, I decided to check out the playlists. This one compiled by rootsy Kentucky singer Kelsey Waldon, is excellent, filled with largely obscure artists both black and white. The superb Algia Mae Hinton was completely new to me. She lived in the North Carolina Piedmont and performed as a non-professional until she was "discovered" in the 1980's. If I have one quibble, I'm not sure why Kelsey chose 5 of the 17 tracks from the well known duo of Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard with so many other deserving artists out there. But it's still a great (and informative) listen.
