Posting for a friend.

David Binney - The Luxury of Guessing (1995)
I (probably erroneously) like to consider Binney one of the frontrunners of the Jazz trend of mixing "serious" tradional-minded Jazz with a more fusion-like sound that includes plugged-in instruments and sometimes overdubbing. No, Binney's not really among the first of the first I guess, but he is among the group that makes this form of Jazz that most resonates with me.

I bet I could carry this thought through to a theory that Ben Wendel is the godson of Binney's sound, but that's maybe pushing it.

Rosamunde Quartett - Haydn: The Seven Words (comp. 1787, rec. 2001)

This mesmerizing work consists of seven movements for string quartet to accompany a reading of the last words of Jesus Christ on Good Friday at the Cadiz cathedral. Later Haydn added words to make an oratorio, but the pure instrumental version is definitive. It is no surprise to see such an intimate work on ECM Records, whose motto is "the most beautiful sound next to silence".

:5.0: on the Sam-O-Meter. I would give it 7 stars if I could.

Carlos Garnett - Journey To Enlightenment (Muse 1974)

@JazzyRandy doubtless already knows Carlos. His second album is an outstanding example of soul jazz. Jazz Messengers sez:

Saxophonist Carlos Garnett’s second album was recorded from the Muse label in 1974. ‘Journey To Enlightenment’ is a strong 10 min long Spiritual Jazz track, that begins with Chant like vocals and then progresses into an instrumental piece featuring a blistering Sax Solo from Carlos, and lovely melodic keyboard solo from Hubert Eaves, before returning to the vocal chants again towards the end. ‘Love Flower’ a very funky Spiritual Jazz song featuring Ayodele Jenkins mesmerising powerful vocals. ‘Chana’ is the album’s best known track, a highly rhythmic bustling instrumental Jazz Dancer, which has been a popular floor filler on the UK Jazz Scene for many years.

I did not know, but I do now, thanks to you. Thanks! I'll definitely track this down.

Tom Harrell - Live at the Village Vanguard (2002)

Listening to this so soon after being front row at the VV, I can't help but imagine what it was like to have been in that same seat for this show. I have a feeling I'm going to think that every time I hear a live Village Vanguard album from now on.
