The Good Ol' Persons - California Old-Time Bluegrass Music (1977)

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

Bluegrass music has a long history in Northern California. The GOP, originally an all-female band, attracted a lot of notice at the "Freight & Salvage House" in Berkeley. For this, their debut recording, Paul Shelasky stepped into his sister Sue's fiddle role. The rest of the band consisted of Kathy Kallick, Laurie Lewis, Barbara Mendelsohn and Dorothy Baxter. Kallick and Lewis have continued to record and perform prolifically over the years, both together and separately.

The Good Ol' Persons performed bluegrass with an old-timey slant. Mendelsohn plays banjo in the clawhammer style that predated Earl Scruggs , as well as hammered dulcimer and spoons. A highlight is "Rutabaga Boogie", a bouncing tribute to the sadly under-respected vegetable.

Walt Disney - Walt Disney Takes You To Disneyland (1956)

What struck me in listening to this album was the fact that Disneyland reflected Walt's life itself: a journey from small town America to a Fantasyland that he created for all of us. Music was a vital ingredient both in his films and in his Magic Kingdom. He went far beyond the humdrum program music of the day to create soundscapes conjuring up the places and people that continue to live in our imaginations.

Vincenzo Bellini - Norma (Welsh National Opera, Sutherland, Pavarotti et al).

What an interesting cast this one has to offer. Montserrat Caballe (or more properly, María de Montserrat Bibiana Concepción Caballé i Folch) has become a big favorite around here and Norma is a signature role for her.

Conductor Richard Bonynge has a real flair for opera, no surprise since he was married to Joan Sutherland until her death.

Vinyl Spin of the Day #2.

Tommy was one of the great lost Chicago piano-playing bluesmen. These small label sides show his versatility to great advantage in a variety of settings from quartet to orchestra.
