The Choir of St. Gayane - Komitas: Divine Liturgy (comp. 1892-1915, rec. 1988)
The Story of Komitas (1869-1935) is as unbelievable as it is tragic. Wiki tells us:
Soghomon Soghomonian,ordained and commonly known as Komitas 26 September] 1869 – 22 October 1935), was an Ottoman-Armenian priest, musicologist, composer, arranger, singer, and choirmaster, who is considered the founder of the Armenian national school of music. He is recognized as one of the pioneers of ethnomusicology.
His breathtaking "Divine Liturgy" was incomplete at the time of his death in a Paris psychiatric hospital and published posthumously. This majestic acapella concert version was its debut on record.
