Anne-Sophie Mutter, Chicago Symphony Orchestra (James Levine, cond.) - Berg: Violin Concerto; Rihm: Time Chant (1992)

Using the mellifluous Ms. Mutter to play these 20th Century minimalist works is like using your new Bentley Bentayga to haul plants home from the nursery (I was going to say "fertilizer" but that would be needlessly snarky ). Sure you can do it, but why would you want to?

Tragicomedia (Stephen Stubbs, Dir.) - Claudio Monteverdi: Madrigali Concertanti (comp. 1587-1651; rec. 1993)

Cutting edge madrigals that reflect the fading of the Renaissance into the Baroque. Now the text begins to achieve mastery over the music rather than being subservient to it. Fewer voices are used, pushing the content forward to center stage.
