Various Artists - Great Vocalists Of The Big Band Era (Publishers Central Bureau comp. 1978)
Vinyl Spin Of The Day.
Publishers Central Bureau in its pre-Internet day was THE discount mail order book and record seller. They eventually began licensing rare recordings from the major labels to create their own new collections like this one from the vaults of Columbia Records. Over the course of 6 LP's it takes a deep dive into the singers of the 30's and 40's from Ella Fitzgerald to Harry Cool, not to mention Snooky Lanson.
For the same reason we don't discuss the physical attributes of Wee Bonnie Baker, Skinnay Ennis, or Pee Wee Hunt (all of whom appear on this collection).
This exciting session predates by a short while the formation of the Jazz Messengers. Blakey is a force of nature here but Joe Gordon, Gigi Gryce, Bernard Griggs and Walter Bishop can more than keep us with him.
