Nat Adderley - You, Baby (1968)

Nat Adderley - You Baby - album cover

Back during my original jazz excursion, Nat only popped up once as a leader (with his fantastic album Work Song) and a few other times playing cornet on his brother Cannonball's albums. Wouldn't be wrong to say he is underappreciated today by even casual jazz fans (this album has only 20 reviews on RYM), but what a player and what a great tone - transitioned nicely between hard bop and soul jazz. Definitely deserves me doing a deeper dive into his output one day.

Various Artists - The Sun Box (1980)

Vinyl Spin Of The Day.

The sound of Sun Records has captivated collectors from the time Sam Phillips unleashed Elvis on an unsuspecting world. Bear Family did their usual encyclopedic job with "The Complete Sun Singles" sprawling over 24 discs in 4 boxes. But 20 years earlier, Charly Records opened the vault with a long run of vinyl LP's presenting the label's hits and rarities. The Sun Box series represented the culmination of their efforts.

The series opened with The Sun Box, aptly numbered "Sun Box 100". The box is filled with three LP's and a full size booklet chock full of photos and ephemera along with copious notes by the compilers, Colin Escott and Martin Hawkins. Each disc focuses on a single genre: blues, country and rockabilly, with the first side devoted to the raw beginnings and the second side, the hits that resulted. For licensing reasons, Elvis is not included but his Sun sides are both familiar and easy to procure. Instead, we have plenty of time to meet the other Sun artists from Jackie Brenston, whose "Rocket 88" was where it all began to Charlie Rich's autumnal "Lonely Weekends." The physical format of the LPs and box and the warm analogue sound all lend themselves perfectly to this kind of in depth study in a way that CD's can't replicate.
