The Young Dubliners - Alive, Alive'o (1998)

Incoming from MusicBoomerang.

Some time ago, I took a chance on a "Celtic Mystery Pack" from one of the great traders at Da Boom. This record alone justified the entire package. The Young Dubliners of Santa Monica have been mainstays of the Irish Rock scene in the US since their formation in 1988. They are best appreciated in their natural habitat, on stage before a well-oiled crowd such as the one at San Diego's Belly Up Tavern heard on this scorching set.

If those album covers don't scare you, nothing will. :scared::scared:

But be not afraid. Nobody performed these works better than the composer himself. And Ormandy's style was muscular enough to keep up with him. These two fine pre-war albums demonstrate that classical recordings did not begin when stereo came along.

Unbunny ~ Snow Tires (2004)

I don't know much about Bad Bunny. I know I could ask my son, and he would fix me up.

After all, both my kids are more Puerto Rican (by way of Nuyorican) than I am.

So, instead, I did the eleventy-twelfth uncoolest thing I could think of, and listened to this Unbunny album instead.

P. S. By the way, I learned of this band via TheKeenGuy, probably 15 years ago.

Various Artists - Beat Girls Español! (rec. 1965-71, Ace comp. 2018)

While we were grooving to "Get Off Of My Cloud" and "Color My World", these ladies were warning us that "Aquí En Mi Nube" and urging us to "Pinta Mi Mundo ". "Society's Child" came out less literally as "El Es Distinto A Ti" ("He Is Different From You"). Not everything here is a cover but each of the two dozen songs is a joyous slice of 60's pop, Spanish style.

I might ask you to speed it up, but I'm more interested in your progress through the Penguin Jazz Guide.

The Modern Jazz Quartet ~ Dedicated to Connie [Live] (1960, 1995)

The Connie to whom this live album is dedicated is of course Connie Kay, who was the drummer in these sessions. He passed in 1994, a year before this double-set was released.

I have been thinking recently of male Jazz musicians who had female-sounding names, since Zeeba mentioned Gigi Gryce. So, there's Connie Kay, Gigi Gryce, and Tina Brooks, off the top of my head. I'm guessing that Sam or Zeebs might have a few more.

The best I can come up with right now is Chick Webb but I’ll ponder overnight

Fats Waller - The Complete Associated Transcription Sessions (rec. 1935-1939, Jazz Unlimited comp. 2001)

NDAtMTcxNC5qcGVn.jpeg

After his Victor sides began selling well, Fats took on a side hustle waxing recordings for Associated Transcriptions to be aired on radio. He adopted the flimsy pseudonym "Flip Wallace" for two marathon sessions of 22 and 31  sides in a single day. For the 1935 date, he placed the songs in 3-song medleys with his characteristic patter in between. The material is mostly familiar to Fats fans from his retail discs, but he never played the same song in the same way twice so these transcriptions from a Danish reissue label are a real treasure trove.
