Schiit Audio has released their CD transport (i.e., no DAC inside):

This is a very timely post. I just bought a new Dell computer and it couldn't be ordered with an internal CD drive. I did a lot of investigation and came up with this solution for $48 on Amazon:

Apart from losing a USB port and having a bit of clutter on top of my tower, I'm very happy with it so far. It seems faster and sturdier than the ones that came with my older workstations.

The Schiit CD transport is a very different device. It is a CD transport that sends a digital signal to a DAC from a CD, and also a DDC (digital to digital converter, e.g., you can send it a SPDIF signal and it will output USB). What you bought is something that can both play and rip CDs, controlled by a computer.

I've gone back to using my Schiit stack and Sennheiser headphones for my main music listening, and it is better. I had to take a break and use the AirPods Max for awhile to realize that.
