This is a very timely post. I just bought a new Dell computer and it couldn't be ordered with an internal CD drive. I did a lot of investigation and came up with this solution for $48 on Amazon:
The Schiit CD transport is a very different device. It is a CD transport that sends a digital signal to a DAC from a CD, and also a DDC (digital to digital converter, e.g., you can send it a SPDIF signal and it will output USB). What you bought is something that can both play and rip CDs, controlled by a computer.This is a very timely post. Apart from losing a USB port and having a bit of clutter on top of my tower, I'm very happy with it so far. It seems faster and sturdier than the ones that came with my older workstations.
