Random Music Thoughts

Having received and read thousands of fan letters over the years, I've only kept a select few. One such gem arrived in 1978 – a letter from Detective Fish, its author who still remains a mystery. Finding the letter hilarious and odd, I framed it and placed it in my guest bathroom, where it consistently brings laughter to visitors. The quest to unveil the identity of Detective Fish persists, leaving the possibility that someday I may uncover the person behind the letter.

Detective Fish was great on Barney Miller.

As I listen to some yearly playlists, can't help but thinking back to the radio countdowns of my high school/college years. Every July 4th weekend (and sometimes other holiday weekends), WNEW in New York City would count down the "Top 1027" songs evah (rock station so focus on rock/pop - WCBS the oldies station would have their own countdown). So summer weekends would be spend counting down songs. You almost hated to go to bed because you'd wake up having missed like 150+ songs wondering which ones you missed

Every year but one I remember "Stairway to Heaven" would win but one year "Layla" took the top spot and I remember it being a BIG DEAL (ah to be back in high school back then).
You could even send a self addressed stamped envelope to the station to get a list of the countdown - I think I did one year

Surprisingly not many of these countdowns are easily tracked down on the web but here's 1987 (when I was between freshman and sophomore years). If you do check it out, remember it's NYC/NJ station and it's the 80s so Bruce Springsteen is very represented (as are other big groups of the time like Van Halen). Still it's fun to look back especially lower down on the list (the top songs as you might expect are pretty predicatable)
