Television and Internet Shows

Cobra Kai (season one)

JazzyDaughter2 and I binged out on 3 6-episode seasons of Rust Valley Restorers (very entertaining) and went with the Netflix recommended Rust To Riches which didn't catch our fancy and we ditched it after the first episode. Almost randomly, I clicked on this the other day. I knew she and I would be talking at the time and figured it would be better to put on a show that was going to be bad. That way I wouldn't have to miss parts of the show or conversation, because wouldn't be interested in the show.

How wrong I was. The show was so good we watched the first episode without hardly a word between us. Then the second. Yeah, this update to the original Karate Kid saga is cheesy, but it's cheesy in all the right ways. I knew so much nothing about this remake that for the first two episodes I kept thinking, "man, what great casting, that guy looks a lot like Ralph Machio." Then I checked out the cast lineup and realized it really was Ralph.

We just watched two episodes and time flew. Being curious, I went to see how this was received by the reviewers. I can't believe Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 100. I mean, I like it, but I can't imagine they give out very many 100s.

If you liked The Karate Kid, you should like this. I still have never seen a Karate Kid movie in its entirety (because the younger me thought it was too cheesy), and I really like this show.

^ I actually saw this in a continuing legal education video that I watched yesterday. There were a few different deepfakes presented.

The title of the whole video was Digital Evidence: Consumer Electronics and the IoT.

Yesterday, I learned that IoT means Internet of Things. The internet of things means any device that is connected to the net.

Are you watching this, Nick?

Stanley Tucci's Travel Series, Searching for Italy, Is a Mediterranean Masterpiece

Of course, this could have gone in the Bistro.

Mi scusi.

Of course! He's a natural for that series.

When scanning Apple+ the other night for shows, I saw they had a variety of music documentaries including a 6 part series on 1971, a four part series on punk music, and a Zappa documentary. Mouth watering - some nice summer fare for me

I have no plans to watch that show. I'm sure it's good, but it has a goofy and "positive" vibe to it I'm not interested in. Apple loves to be milquetoast.

It's not for everybody but a lot of people including myself love it - it definitely struck a chord this Covid-19 era as Lasso is derided but all characters around him as too optimistic and positive and yet wins most of them over while remaining true to himself.
Sometimes even the most cynical among us need a little positivity :)

Binged McCartney 321 on Hulu yesterday. It is a 6 episode series featuring Rick Rubin interviewing Paul. It is a nice gap filler until the big Beatles event on Disney+ this fall. @Nickyboy you are a Beatles fan if I remember correctly. You'd enjoy it for sure.
Gonna look for it. Thanks for the heads up!!

Startup - poster.jpeg
As someone who worked for small businesses, including a couple of internet/tech startups, out of a multitude of streaming options this one caught my attention. I went into this completely blind, not having read more than ten words about the premise. I knew very little besides the general feeling it was about 3 young adults from different backgrounds somehow getting involved in a startup tech company. I didn't even know it was set in Miami until way after the 1st episode - I thought it had multiple locations.

Maybe not knowing anything about the premise enhanced my enjoyment. Every episode included a surprise that ratcheted up the suspense. By the end of Season1, I was desperate to get to the next episode. I hope they can keep this up through the 2nd season.

This is a short doc about the crack epidemic in Palm Beach County, FL during the 80s. I did not live in West Palm Beach at the time, I was further south in Delray. But I've seen some of the houses that were pictured in this video more recently.

There is something kind of off and creepy about the way people talk in this film, approaching uncanny valley territory. Everyone has a very slight accent that might give you the impression that Palm Beach is more southern than it really is. But this is definite evidence that spoken English as well as written English is constantly evolving.

Oh, and very little real estate looks this run down these days around here.

The Sex Lives Of College Girls

Besides continuing to make it though the Chicago series with my 13 year old (finished Chicago PD, on 7th season of Fire, will hit Med when Fire is completed,) I'm not watching/streaming much these days. I tried "Show Me A Hero" but stalled near the end of the first episode because the mood of the show didn't fit the mood of me at that time. I'll give it another try later.

With some time to kill this week and realizing I could activate HBOMax for free, I watched Matrix 4, then moved on to this series. I fully expected it to be bad and to turn it off after ten minutes. Instead, I was kind of into it from the beginning, sunk into it by the end of 2nd episode, and binged through it in a three days.

I need to talk to Mindy Kaling and ask if her college days were really like this. Mine definitely were not. Then again, I was a nerd so maybe that had something to do with it.

BTW: Filmed at Vassar, and looks fantastic!
