What Movies Have You Seen Lately?

Dead Poets Society (1989)

I first saw this on a date with dear, darling Nikki. Oh, what a rush.

I watched it with my son last night. I can't believe this is 30 years old. I can't believe how many of the details I had completely forgotten.

Every time I thought it was getting a little too sentimental, too obvious, too hamfisted, it redeemed itself.

It was great.

Joker (2019)

JazzySon said that after I took the girls to see Aladdin last night, I owed him. So at noon today we went to see this.

The movie this most reminds me of is Taxi Driver. Though ostensibly a superherovillian movie, this is simply a movie-length character study and cautionary tale of one deranged man. I liked it very much, but I can see why others might not. It is sad, depressing, dark, tough at times to take, bleak, and has a couple moments of unsettling (to some) brutalilty.

What is not debateable is the virtuostic performance of Joaquin Phoenix. The man is in approximately 117 minutes of this 2-hour movie. It really is a one-man show. Deniro is also great with his role, as is everyone else. I haven't seen much of the 2019 movie lineup, but I'll risk appearing ignorant and nominate Joaquin for best actor already.

Ford Vs Ferrari

My son wanted to go see a movie yesterday and suggested this. It looked okay, but I worried it might lag with a 2.5 hour run time. I suggested a couple of other options, but he stood firm on this. I relented and this is what we saw.

I enjoyed it a lot. JazzySon said he could tell because I was chuckling to myself a lot. Great racing scenes. Great acting. Good story. Abrupt ending.

Oh, and a great soundtrack. I reminded myself several times throughout the movie to check into the soundtrack.

I watched "Yesterday" on the plane. It was more enjoyable than I though it would be. Although I still don't get the joke about Coke.

My Sweetheart and I saw that last weekend. It was really good. I'm a car guy, have loved the GT40 since I was a kid and knew most of the story. So it was particularly entertaining to me to get to see it told visually. She's not a car guy, and still really enjoyed it. She even enjoyed the racing scenes. You didn't have to love cars to connect to it. There were enough personalities to be entertaining (and humorous) and the story didn't get bogged down with automotive purist details.

We watched "The Irishman" yesterday afternoon. Fantastic cast and outstanding soundtrack, as you would expect.
That said, this movie was at least twice as long as it needed to be to tell the story. And on top of that, do we really need to see yet another movie with DeNiro, Pesce, and Pacino playing mobsters doing hit jobs? Many of the scenes were directly lifted from 'The Godfather", but I guess that is to be expected with the story line. But............yeah, I've already seen that. Multiple times. With the same actors. No need to torture us again with more of the same.
I've had enough. I wasn't that impressed ultimately, just because it has become a memetic trope at this point. If you aren't well versed with "The Godfather" and "Goodfellas", you might enjoy this. Otherwise, pass.

I heard some people on satellite radio talking about the Oscar wins last night (I didn't watch them). One of the guys said that "Parasite" was a great movie, and that was to be expected based on the director's previous movies. He named a few, one of which was "The Host". My ears pricked up at that. I watched that a few years ago and thought it was an absolutely perfectly done "horror" movie. It wasn't scary, per se, but kept you in very nervous suspense the whole time. So very well done. With that said, I am looking forward to watching "Parasite" some time soon.
Did any of you see it? What did you think? They are saying that it is along the mind-fuck lines of "Get Out", which I loved, but much more twisted and engaging.

I saw it - it was excellent. Exquisitely scripted and paced. Direction is great too - well deserved Oscar in a tough field of directors. It's not as much of an "Oh My God" stunner as Get Out. At the end, I had a "hmmm" expression but the more my wife, son and I each thought about the film over the next two days, the more we appreciated it.

That being said, there are some I've spoken to who didn't really enjoy/appreciate it - a friend who fancies himself a cineaste wasn't as impressed. The next day, I was ordering a hamburger at a restaurant near the movies - was going to see Little Women and the young server asked me "have you seen Parasite. It's nothing like I've ever seen before". So in two days, I heard the range of opinions

Knives Out (2019)

Watched this with my son yesterday. More than once he remarked that he had assumed it was an action movie because of the title and the presence of Daniel Craig. He had absolutely no idea it was a mystery. He wasn't disappointed, just genuinely surprised.

Speaking of Craig, we were both very impressed with his deep American southern accent. The entire cast was impressive. As was the script. Overall, it was a very good movie in every aspect. And plenty funny, too.

It's not a life changer or a movie that sparks deep personal introspection, but it deserves two finger-lickin' thumbs up!

Cool. That's been in my list to watch. Maybe tonight after dinner I will queue it up.

There are supposedly 66 references to movies in this picture. I banged out 20 of them right off the bat. What do you see?
