A Century of Music

The last truly great time period for rock music?
I don't know. The following periods were pretty great.

I've put them in spoilers, for convenience.

P. S.
You do know I'm just busting your chops, I hope.

Interesting question. Not sure you'd agree, but I'd probably go early 2000s with The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Hives, Dylan's resurgence, Gorillaz, Spoon, The Shins, and still some good Weezer.

No, the White Stripes, Strokes, and the Hives were great.

The White Stripes are completely in my wheelhouse and I almost never listen to them. :(

Off my usual Monday playlist schedule, but yesterday did my 1994 song playlist (just plum forget to post about it)

So today, started 1994 albums - quite the day. Some tremendous albums this year (especially for a Britpop fan like myself)
Not a bad years for iconic album cover art either

Weezer - Weezer (1994)
Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York (1994)
Oasis - Definitely Maybe (1994)
Blur - Parklife (1994)
Ween - Chocolate and Cheese (1994)
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication (1994)

The early nineties were fucking gold.

Or perhaps during those years my brain was at maximum imprintability (a word I just made up, apparently).

^^
Looking at the 6 albums I spun today all of which I really enjoy and play regularly, the only one i actually listened to in and around 1994 was Nirvana (and may have been a few years late at that). In 1994, I graduated med school, got married, moved and started internship. So really little time fo music (or movies or TV or books) in the mid to late 90s. Most 90s music I discovered a decade later (or even more).

I imagine the sleep deprivation of internship (I thought it was residency) was not conducive to music enjoyment.

True. And just not keeping up with what was out there. No concerts. Didn’t really listen to new music or music shop

(internship is the first year of residency traditionally the worst - though recent hourly restrictions and regulations have made it a lot easier. All together did a 4 year residency after school plus one year of a fellowship where one specializes further)

Beck - Mellow Gold (1993)
Suede - Dog Man Star (1993)
Jeff Buckley - Grace (1993)

Quite the year - hell of a listen today
Must admit I haven't broken out Mellow Gold in a bit and forgot how much I dig its sound
Dog Man Star really may be better than Suede's debut (and I love their debut) - it's a big-sounding, sweeping album that still has such elegance to it. Great year in BritPop

I did start listening to 1995 music later last week but given, shall we say, the distractions of the week, was quite inconsistent

With Oasis, Pulp and Supergrass, just a fantastic year for Britpop, my favorite subgenre of the decade

Apologies to "Sabotage" and several Nirvana and Oasis songs that I love, but IMO Pulp's "Common People" is the greatest song of the 1990s

After posting past couple of days listens, got a good day of 1995 listening today to finish of the year :)
