Wrapping up 2009 with a mix of albums. Love the Decemberists, but haven't broken out Hazards in years - not sure the concept album holds up as well as some of their earlier efforts but still a nice listen. Allison Mosshart, Jack White, et al's Horehound and its deep fuzz, garage blues holds up better - really good listen in fact. Even through in Springsteen's worst album here which I revisit periodically to confirm, yes, it still is his worst album.

Yes, it's Monday and moving onward to...2010 (!)
Another decade here - and, in fact, the final decade - plan was to finish with 2019 (so a full 100 years of music starting at 1920)
Big milestone and though plenty of years left, feel like I'm in the final stretch :)

Like most Mondays, starting with a playlist of various singles of the year with artists like Adele, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Eminem, Rihanna, The Black Keys, The Decemberists, Pink, Usher, Black Eye Peas, Big Boi, B.o.B., Arcade Fire, Broken Bells, LCD Soundsystem, Vampire Weekend, Gorillaz, and Lil Wayne.

Some 2010 albums over the past couple of days:

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs (2010)
The Black Keys - Brothers (2010)
Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid (2010)
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010)
Broken Bells - Broken Bells (2010)
Band of Horses - Infinite Arms (2010)

I feel like after yesterday/today's albums, I should buy thick framed glasses, a fedora, and a scarf and go drink some green tea, maybe a PBR if I feeling adventurous

Jumped right back into it yesterday with my 2011 playlist which included artists like Maroon 5, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, LMFAO, Jay-Z and Kanye West, The Black Keys, Lana Del Rey, Drake, Radiohead, Frank Ocean, Real Estate, and Adele

Playlist hit a bit hard as these songs were definitely on the radio when my kids were younger - it just seems like yesterday but, holy shit, it was 10 years ago! When my daughter was playing Adele, she was 13 and now is a woman in graduate school at 23 - where did time go?!:(

And today, starting albums of 2011:

Beirut - The Rip Tide (2011)
The Black Keys - El Camino (2011)
Adele - 21 (2011)

A nice start - typically when I review what albums I'm going to play for each year, I'll use sites like Acclaimed Music or Best Ever Albums as a stepping off point. Using those lists, might have missed Beirut's album as it was pretty low down on such lists. That saddens me - it is such a haunting, elegant album, probably in my top 3 of the whole decade (alright, I don't have hundreds of albums I regularly spin from the last decade admittedly). Back (again, yikes!) a decade ago on the old site, it was my number one album of 2011 when we had yearly ranking threads

And though Brothers is probably more critically acclaimed and blues purists gravitate to The Black Keys earlier albums, I feel El Camino is their best

What links both Beirut's and The Black Keys' entries is both are tight albums coming in under 40 minutes - fits my M.O. with album preference. Tight, no filler.

As far a modern 21st century pop albums go (with their limitations), Adele's 21 is possibly the best.

A good 2011 listening day continues:
Bon Iver - Bon Iver (2011)
P.J. Harvey - Let England Shake (2011)
Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost (2011)

Edit: finishing up the Girls album now - forgot what a GREAT guitar album it is. Always struck that a song called "Vomit" can be so damn beautiful

Today begins 2013 week (after this week, 6 more left - yay!)

As always, listening to a Monday playlist of the year's music including artists like Daft Punk, Eminem, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, HAIM, Lorde, Pharrell, Justin Timberlake, Pitbull, Drake, John Legend, One Direction, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Fitz and the Tantrums, Avicii, and Vampire Weekend.

Albums of 2013 begin today:

Arcade Fire - Reflektor (2013)
Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City (2013)
Arctic Monkeys - AM (2013)
David Bowie - The Next Day (2013)

Reflektor has a different sound, and I would never suggest it's as good as Funeral and The Suburbs. Still, I like it - aside from being overlong, good albums
My 17 year old interestingly has very strong feelings about ranking Vampire Weekend albums, and he feels Modern Vampires of the City is their best and will gladly argue you down if you feel otherwise. I have just never dug the groups vibe so don't really have strong feelings about their albums.

AM is kind of like the Arctic Monkeys on Valium - quite the mellow album. Not as good as their early stuff but enjoyable

I've mentioned before how I do exercises like these to almost force me to revisit albums that, for whatever reason (typically because I tend to retreat to old faves/comfort food albums), I haven't spun in ages. I don't think I've listened to The Next Day in 6-7 years - naughty me. Wonderful album.

What about Neon Bible? What about Everything Now?
My personal ranking would go:
Funeral
The Suburbs
Reflektor
Neon Bible
Everything Now

I know Rick and others would put Neon Bible higher - I really like it. I dunno - perhaps it's position between two excellent albums affects my ranking. Still I appreciate Arcade Fire trying some new directions in Reflektor so I give them points for that.
