A Century of Music

OMG.

I had a busy day today and did not stop to reflect that the end is near for this thread?

I have mixed feelings about that. When I once joked that it should be renamed "A Century of Posts" I half believed it to be true.

:) Though I've been in countdown mode for a couple of months now, I must say when I realized next week would be my final week (sticking with the original plan for a "century" from 1920 through 2019. I'm not sure I thought (given some past fallen projects of mine) that this idea would last, nor did I think it would last almost 2 years (first post September 2019). I'm sure over those two years, this thread has elicited some eyerolls and some thoughts of "Ugh is this still going on?!" (memory of Rex Harrison's Pope Julius in The Agony and the Ecstasy "Buonarroti, when will you make it end?!"). But I hope many here have found being along with my journey here at least occasionally interesting. For me, it has been wonderful watching the evolution/history of popular music, and, as I have stated before, it has almost forced me to revisit forgotten favorites and hear new music and genres out of my comfort zone (not a bad thing for a 53 yo to do from time to time).

Yes indeed, yesterday started my 2019 playlist of singles of the year
As above, the last year in my century of music. :)

Today starting some 2019 albums:

Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell! (2019)
Lizzo - Cuz I Love You (2019)
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Ghosteen (2019)

A painting of a wild forest with various animals, including white horses, lions, lambs, leopards, monkeys, swans, flamingos, parrots and butterflies. Sun rays are visible through the trees and a rainbow is visible on the mountainside. Uppercase white text on top reads Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds; larger uppercase white text in the centre reads Ghosteen.

I think I've said this earlier, but this series has introduced me to most of Lana Del Rey's albums - I really dig her sound

Saw Lizzo on David Letterman's interview show on Netflix. It gave me hope for the next generation of music - loved her interview and this album, a tight, energetic 33 minute pop/R&B album

Nick Cave continues a sparse, synth laden style he ushered in with Push the Sky Away doing his best Eno-era Bowie impression. What a weird cover art too. I tend to like Nick a little more rocking and angrier, but as this is probably the only Cave album I hadn't listened to, I was happy to check in out

Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride (2019)
Tyler, the Creator - Igor (2019)
Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising (2019)
Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go (2019)

A hand-drawn globe against a white background, with an orange border on the left-hand side. The words FATHER+OF+THE+BRIDE encircle the globe, with VAMPIRE WEEKEND and SONY MUSIC (as in Sony Music Entertainment logo) printed above and below the globe respectively. The globe is centrally positioned to Atlantic Ocean, with visible Americas and Western parts of Europe and Africa in most releases; Japanese release has globe positioned to East Asia and Pacific Ocean and is centring on Japan.

Eilish sits on the edge of a white bed, in front of a dark background. She wears white clothing, with white eyes while smiling demonically at the camera.

Quite the mix today - all new spins for me (though I know singles off several). Really enjoyed Tyler, the Creator's neo-soul. Weyes Blood had almost a Todd Rundgren sound.
Wanted to listen to Billie Eilish given her personality - I knew several singles. Not my style. But that album cover is creepy AF

Angel Olsen - All Mirrors (2019)
Big Thief - Two Hands (2019)
The Highwomen - The Highwomen (2019)

Wrapping up 2019 with three more albums - some fantastic female artists in recent years (many of the albums this year have highlighted them).

With a nice sampling of 2019 albums, I close my Century of Music series. Can't believe I started back in September 2019 (and can't believe I stuck with it). Again, this series has made me appreciate the evolution of popular recorded music from 1920 through 2019. Not only have I appreciated the development of various musical styles but it also allowed me to follow individual artists output over their careers. Glad I continued it into this past decade because I naturally gravitate towards old favorites - I sheepishly admit I had only heard one of the thirteen 2019 albums I spun this week.
Looking forward to getting back to some old favorites. Thanks to all who checked in regularly, didn't roll their eyes too much, and chimed in with thoughts.
One final word: Whew! :)
