First listen for me: Board sof Canada’s “Roygbiv” (cute name that brings me back to science class). Not Boards first entry, I saw the song and immediately worried if this would be some 20 min song. Surprise - less that three and brevity helped. I enjoyed it

Wasn’t impressed with Yeezus when it first came out, but “Blood on the Leaves” is a good ‘un (and hey, Billie’s “Strange Fruit” is sampled).

“The Ghost of Tom Jones” - great song from Bruce’s second half of career, both in its original and it’s more electrified redo with Bruce and Tom Morello

Lee Perry’s “Roast Fish...” and William Bell’s Stax original of “You Don’t Miss” (remade by Otis Redding) are both tremendously cool songs:cool: (the Stax tour was one of my high points in visiting Memphis)

Great, great list. Do any deserve better spots? Well certainly there are different preferences (I've always loved the Jarmels' soulful "Little Bit of Soap") but I'm OK with most of these. Again, a great morning listen. No tremendous injustices IMO but some good songs
a) Heroes mentioned in "No More Heroes": Trotsky, Lenin, "the Great Elmyra" (perhaps an erroneous reference to painter/forger Elmyr de Hory), and Sancho Panza. The Stranglers need a higher bar for heroes (one is fictional for goodness sake!)
b) "One Mint Julep" from 1951 was indeed first recorded by the doo wop group the Clovers. Of course, it's been re-recorded tons of times and most think of Ray Charles' version. But the Clovers version is one of the first singles to have a sax solo per Wiki
c) Big Joe Williams, cool Delta bluesman and 9-string guitarist (and most definitely not the standards singer who later sang with Basie)
d) I'd have to be really, really drunk to include "Kung Fu Fighting" on any such greatest-songs list even down at #3356
e) We Yanks know After the Fire's version of "Der Kommissar" better than the Falco 1981 original. I had forgotten about the original actually; haven't heard it in years.
f) Great hearing Shirley Bassey's style translate to the electronic music of the Propellerheads

I must admit, the apostrophe both before and after the N has always bothered me. It's Rock! An exciting, rebellious and sinister genre, right? Just because you're taking out two letters doesn't mean you HAVE to substitute both with apostrophes. How about screw the apostrophes, rockers, and just say Rock N Roll?! Or maybe just a simple off-the-cuff Rock N' Roll? (that's how I tend to type it). Something about those two apostrophes seem wrong.

Oh, and the Tempts "Get Ready" is killer and deserves a better spot

Sonny Rollins' "Blue Seven" off Saxophone Colossus is just great hard bop. d) Between Sam Cooke, Sam & Dave's "I Thank You" and Bob & Earl's "Harlem Shuffle", I am filled with soul today!
e) Little surprised about the presence of "Abraham, Martin & John" on the list especially above "Wooden Ships", "Harlem Shuffle", and Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" (all of these could be arguably higher). Still, Dion's tribute song is so beautifully sung, it's hard to fault it's place here.

I'm comin' I'm comin'

Busy day (though not busy enough to post the songs themselves)

Thoughts:
a) Today's two playlists had two Foo Fighters songs - see now that we've gotten past the dreck of the bottom 3000s, I expect the entire Foo Fighters catalog will be popping up now ;) I tell you, to me, their songs are interchangeable. Just can't get into them as much as Dave Grohl seems like a cool guy
b) Mambo #5 search brought Lou Bega's hit from the 90s up first. Yikes, dodged a bullet there - luckily I paid close attention and picked the correct choice, Perez Prado (which I own and should listen to more)
c) U2 is very well represented in this countdown, and sometimes (as much as I love certain albums) perhaps a bit too much. "Moment of Surrender" is just a'ight. I will say I've never listened to their Europop album Pop ever but I kinda dug "Lemon"'s sound.
d) Lotta good second tier 70s songs today: "Mr. Big Stuff", "Right Place Wrong Time", "Tell Me Something Good"
e) I said it earlier in the countdown, every time I hear The National, I think of SGal....then wonder how she could have adored that group so much. Yawn
f) "In 1814 we took a little trip along with Colonel Jackson 'long the mighty Mississip'"...my dad used to sing lines from Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans". Though actually born in L.A., he moved to LA (Louisiana) and is associated with our fair state down her. Fun Horton fact: he married Hank Williams widow and was good friends with Johnny Cash (who covered his country hit "When It's Springtime In Alaska (It's 40 Below)" (which I just found out Horton did today - I've always known the Cash version))
g) Yes I misspelled "Waiting iin Vain" (and too lazy to correct). No, I didn't misspell "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb "
h) Never heard Del Shannon's "Keep Searchin'" but man it's a cool ditty
i) I don't think there are any great injustices on today's list, but Springsteen fans all love the two entries "Bobby Jean" (which is an ode to Little Steven actually who was leaving the band around the Born In the USA tour (Nils Lofgren joined the band at that time, now they both tour with Bruce) and "Prove It All Night". Both really are better than, say, "Livin' La Vida Loca" and "Return of the Mack" as much as enjoy both of those 90s hits

As much as I love Nirvana, I've always hated the Foo Fighters. Just sounds like so much MOR AOR corporate rock by committee.

b) Anne Murray on the top songs list...is this a sign of the Apocalypse? Kidding aside, "Snowbird" is just an OK song
c) Ditto, the GNR entry "Rocket Queen". And I have never particularly enjoyed "Patches"
d) OTOH, though I seldom listen to Joni Mitchell (and don't enjoy/appreciate her like others her), "River" is tremendous and deserves a better place
e) Love, love, love "Sunday Mornin' Coming Round". "There's something in a Sunday makes a body feel alone"
f) Interestingly TWO Original Dixieland Jazz Band entries from the 19-teens just 80 songs apart. I think the lower entry "Livery Stable Blues" should be the better situated of the two
g) "Gold-fingah! He's the man..."
h) Interesting appearance of the Urge Overkill version of Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" made famous with it's appearance in Pulp Fiction
i) Nick Cave scores another entry, and another good one. Though I discovered him late in life, I truly believe he's one of the most talented songwriters of the past 25 years
j) "Life is a Highway"...eh?! I guess a lot of people like it (either this version or the later Rascal Flatts cover)
k) "Wall of Death", the last song on the last Richard and Linda album - as such, it has a tremendous resonance for me
