Acclaimed Music Top 5000 Songs

"Love Is All Around" by The Troggs (1967)

Such a beautiful song. A little bit of baroque pop redolent of the best of the period. Almost up there with the Left Banke, both of whose hits will be higher, I think..

Has "With a Girl Like You" come up on the list, yet?

I expect "Wild Thing" to be higher, both by The Troggs and Jimi.

Edit: Then, "Ring My Bell" comes along, just in time to be made into a Walmart "Free Two-Day Shipping" ad.

2394) "It Ain't Me Babe" by Bob Dylan (1964)
2393) "Supernaut" by Black Sabbath (1972)

Thoughts:
a) surprised that even now 600+ songs later we're getting songs that came up in the 3000s before the re-jiggering of the list but Duffy, The Cure and Camera Obscura (if memory serves me correct) made huge jumps
b) The minimalist piece (28+ minutes - eek) of "Jesus' Blood..." where a repetitive verse of a homeless man singing is looped with the slow addition of strings was interesting....and too long
c) always intrigued when cover versions make the list. The Scissor Sisters electro-pop version of "Comfortably Numb" (the original will certainly appear much higher up) was not my cup of tea but it was definitely different and curiously creepy
d) Kick and Push and Kick and Push...and Coast
e) I've spoken before about really not getting into music much until junior year in high school when I fell hard, but my aunt would buy me various albums as presents for holidays. Many of them were big hits like the soundtracks for Grease or Saturday Night Live. One curious purchase was Blondie's Plastic Letters (and I've loved Blondie Since) so was delighted to hear the opening track "Denis" (which of course is a remake of Randy & The Rainbow's "Denise")
f) "Supernaut" is a great Sabbath song - oh those guitars
g) I really like "Drive" - aces as far as 80s pop ballads go. That and Morricone's opener to "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" would rank better on my personal list but not surprised at their placement here

2366) "Goodnight Irene" by Leadbelly
2365) "It's The Same Old Song" by Four Tops
2364) "Memory Motel" by The Rolling Stones

Thoughts:
a) Overall solid group of songs here with songs that I would classify as very strong even important works of their genre ("Echoes" for prog, Blue Cheer for proto-punk, "New San Antonio Rose" for country, "Right Here, Right Now" for electronica/"big beat", and "Goodnight Irene for folk/blues). Not saying I disagree with placement here. Surely there's a lot of great songs ahead. But these are some really good songs
b) Wonder if Nirvana's cover of the Meat Puppets "Lake of Fire" (done live on their Unplugged album) will score higher
c) "Memory Motel" is one of those Stones gems (off Black and Blue) I just love. Great song in an underrated album
d) I enjoy Peggy Lee but have always found "Is That All There Is" treacly. Is that all there is, Peggy? She's done better.

2345) "Neigborhood #3 (Power Out)" by Arcade Fire
2344) "Shame, Shame, Shame" by Shirley and Co.

More later today
a) I think each "Neighborhood" part of Arcade Fire's Funeral has found its way to the list
b) The Cars' "Drive" appeared on yesterday's list which I really like but was not surprised at its placement as it's a nice but typical 80s ballad. I AM surprised, however, by "My Best Friend's Girl" appearing at this level.
c) A little embarrassed and surprised I didn't know "All or Nothing". I have a great 2-disc Small Faces collection with 50 songs on it - one would think that would encompass every Small Faces song that could make this list. Plus I've listened to at least three of their albums from time to time. Still, I don't own "All or Nothing" nor do I remember it - and it's a nice ditty!
d) I was not surprised that I didn't know the Kevin Morby song from just 2 yrs ago (or Morby's stuff in general) though I'm sure many here know it. I really liked this song too. Posting both this one and Small Faces song below.

2326) "Better Man" by Pearl Jam
2325) "Night Fever" by Bee Gees
2324) "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" by Neil Young

Thoughts:
One thought - God! I love music. Sure we all her do otherwise we'd belong to ShortWaveRadio Gourmets or Pottery Gourmets, right? But sometimes it just needs to be said. Here in the 2000s to here wonderfully fun songs like Huey "Piano" Smith's "Rockin' Pneumonia" and Kool & The Gang with the powerful soul of Solomon Burke, the bluesy "Since I've Been Loving You" and Albert King, the mindlessly danceable disco of Bee Gees and Candi Statin, the sadness of "Coat of Many Colors", the beauty of "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" - a broad range of emotions and moods passed through me as I listened to this mix and an even broader smile crossed my face. Like many days, I don't want to be here at work but man does music make it so much better. :)

Oh, and "Cry to Me" is way too lowly ranked ;)

Let's Start with this list. More later - I think I can, I think I can
a) Some songs I'm kind of "meh" about but I suppose I can see why they're here - Coldplay, "Year of the Cat", "Desire"
b) OTOH, the great thing about mixes is that you wait a song and you've got great songs like "Logical Song", "No Cars Go" (2003! That long ago!), "I Wish", "Straight to Hell"
c) I gotta go back and count Nick Cave songs - he's well represented on the list and that makes me happy

2272) "On the Regular" by Shamir (2014)
2271) "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" by Dionne Warwick (1968)

Do you ever hurry to turn the volume down on songs like "Cop Killer" ...or, just on songs like "Hollaback Girl"?

Forgot about this version of "Apache." Now, I read the percussion solo is a hip-hop masterpiece.

Alice Cooper appears to be hanging out in the 2200s, with songs containing themes from today's news.

"Do You Know the Way to San Jose" gives me a pleasant earworm for today, only supassed by "Lookin' Out My Backdoor."

I feel the same way about "Do You Know..." and "Lookin' Out..."

I saw "Apache" on the list and wondered if it was the Shadows or Jorgan Ingmann, both of which I have and love. You're right the Incredible Bongos Band is the "more important" version because of its use in sampling in hip hop. Surprisingly I have the IBB album too - I can't tell you the last time I listened to it - I probably picked it up when I did the 1001 Albums You Must Listen To Before You Die series at the old site and haven't played since...I should though...I like bongos :)

And taking your comments in reverse order, yes - this list is always interesting at work because you'll get some mellow low-volume dream pop or ambient piece then some death metal song.

And as much as I enjoy spelling "bananas" with Gwen, I was really surprised that "Hollaback Girl" made the list.

Definitely a week for my Acclaimed Music project (especially as last week was so busy). Will post several short lists as I listen:

2270) "Get By" by Talib Kweli (2002)
2269) "The Pretender" by Foo Fighters (2007)
2268) "Walking on a Dream" by Empire of the Sun (2008)
2267) "We Need A Resolution" by Aaliyah (2001)
2266) "Mundian to Bach Ke/Beware of the Boys" by Panjabi MC (feat Jay-Z) (2003)
2265) "Sex Beat" by The Gun Club (1981)
2264) "I Can't Give Everything Away" by David Bowie (2016)
2263) "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" by The Smiths (1984)
2262) "The Spirit of Radio" by Rush (1980)
2261) "In the Morning" by Junior Boys (2006)
2260) "Santa Monica (Watch the World Die)" by Everclear (1995)
2259) "Show me the Way" by Peter Frampton (1975)
2258) "Gosh" by Jamie xx (2015)

A relatively unfamiliar list - lots of 21st century songs that are not exactly in my wheelhouse (Panjabi MC's Indian hip hop for example), but a pretty enjoyable list too from Empire of the Sun's quirky alternative number to Talib Kweli's enjoyable hip hop. Of course we have some well known numbers too (Frampton, Rush), late Bowie and the herky jerky infectious "Sex Beat".

More:
2257) "This Is A Call" by Foo Fighters (1995)
2256) "In the Summertime" by Mungo Jerry (1970)
2255) "Believe" by Cher (1998)
2254) "Every Single Night" by Fiona Apple (2012)
2253) "Kid" by Pretenders (1979)
2252) "Crash" by The Primitives (1988)

2248) "Oh Girl" by The Chi-Lites (1972)
2247) "Cigarettes and Alcohol" by Oasis (1994)
2246) "Al Capone" by Prince Buster (1964)
2245) "Match Box Blues" by Blind Lemon Jefferson (1927)

More of a diversity re: dates this group.
"In the Summertime" by Mungo Jerry (named after one of T.S. Eliot's cat poems (that would inspire the musical Cats) is a well-known hit but I've never considered it essential
"Believe" by Cher was #1 (as Cher became the oldest female artists to hit #1) - that being said, I don't personally feel it belongs on the list
Otherwise with "Kid", Big Star, Oasis, the Chi-Lites and some good old reggae with "Al Capone", pretty good listening here.

And even more:
2244) "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" by Scissor Sisters
2243) "I'll Never Get Out of the World Alive" by Hank Williams
2242) "Never Too Much" by Luther Vandross
2241) "Love Child" by Diana Ross and the Supremes
2240) "Lost In Music" by Sister Sledge
2239) "Crazy" by Seal
2238) "Bad Girls" by Donna Summer
2237) "Days" by The Kinks
2236) When I Come Around" by Green Day
2235) "I Second That Emotion" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
2234) "Black Magic Woman" by Fleetwood Mac
2233) "Love Is A Battlefield" by Pat Benatar
2232) "It's Only Make Believe" by Conway Twitty
2231) "The Underdog" by Spoon
2230) "Us and Them" by Pink Floyd

Only song I didn't know here was the very perky Scissor Sisters song - enjoyed it!
Some good soul/R&B on the grouping
"Days" is a underrated Kinks song - glad it's here
Weird listening to "Us and Them" without continuing on to "Any Colour You Like" and so on until the end of DSOTM

One more list today:
2229) "This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak For You)" by The Isley Brothers (1966)
2228) "Just" by Radiohead (1995)
2227) "Back for Good" by Take That (1995)
2226) "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba (1997)
2225) "Child in Time" by Deep Purple (1970)
2224) "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" by Spinners (1972)
2223) "Crazy for You" by Madonna (1985)
2222) "Pop Muzik" by M (1979)
2221) "Sweet Thing" by Van Morrison (1968)
2220) "Suburbia" by Pet Shop Boys (1986)
2219) "River" by Joni Mitchell (1971)
2218) "A Night in Tunisia" by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers (1954)
2219) "Walk Like An Egyptian" by Bangles (1986)

2216) "Good Morning, Captain" by Slint (1991)
2215) "05:15" by The Who (1973)
2212) "Sweet Caroline (Good Times Never Seemed So Good)" by Neil Diamond (1969)
2211) "The Man Who Sold the World" by Nirvana (1994)
2210) "Bandages" by Hot Hot Heat (2002)
2209) "It's All Over Now" by The Rolling Stones (1964)

Final thoughts:
a) Good day - around 60 songs
b) I don't think I've heard M's Pop Muzik in several decades. Remember it coming out in grammar school because thought the group's name "M" was quite odd
c) The year on Acclaimed Music for Blakey's "Night in Tunisia" is 1954 which is the Clifford Brown rendition at Birdland. Blakey (always fond of the piece because he was with Dizzy Gillespie when he composed it) has done multiple renditions of the standard with various Jazz Messenger permutations
d) I'm not a tremendously big Joni Mitchell fan (admire her much more than I enjoy her) but "River" is incredible and deserves to be better ranked
e) as often as I've listened to Quadrophenia, I'm not sure I realized there was a zero before the time 5:15
f) Again quite a popular hit, "Walk Like An Egyptian" seems like a light throwaway when played close to songs like "Child in Time", "Drain You", "Sweet Things"
g) So Good! So Good! So Good! (couldn't help it)
h) "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" is one of the smoothest soul love songs

^
Looked at the album Quadrophenia and the 5.15 Wiki post. There’s no listing as 05:15....what’s gives, Acclaimed Music? You’re usually spot on with song titles

That would change the whole meaning of the song, were that the title. It would be a fast song about riding the early train on the way into work.

Why should I care? Why should I care? :boohoo:
