Audiophile Thread

Impressive.

If those are the speakers, they'd better be Bozak Concert Grands.

Honestly, I don't know what they are, but they're three of them.
It was a three channel setup:
  • Preamplifier: McIntosh C-22 (pictured on top)
  • AM/FM Tuner: Fisher R-200 tube tuner.
  • Loudspeakers: Either Altec-Lansing or JBL (James B. Lansing), but they look like they could also be other hi-fi classic models of the day by Klipsch, Jensen, or Tannoy.
  • Turntable: Garrard or Reko-Cut in one photo; the other photo has the turntable inside the cabinet under the Fisher tuner.
  • Reel-to-Reel Tape Deck: Presto 825 3 box/3 channel deck.

Ah so. Thank you.

I posted elsewhere that cleaning my ears made the Bluetooth speaker I use for podcasts sound very sibilant. On my desktop audio system, it has actually increased my perceived sound quality. And my current system has never been sibilant and isn't now.

Maybe not audiophile ...

After a few years of mostly not listening to music on my computer after the great computer crash of the computer before the previous computer, I'm am in the process of re-digitizing my music collection. Starting from scratch and with a little more knowledge than the first time, I decided to not use itunes. I also decided to go with FLAC instead of MP3.

What I didn't realize is how slow it can be to rip to FLAC instead of MP3. And that some discs slow to an excruciating crawl. Because I can only do this when I'm at the computer doing something else, I knew re-digitizing was going to take many many weeks, but now I realize it's going to take several months. Going alphabetically on this first run but skipping as many as I rip, I'm just now getting to "D". At this pace, it's going to be near the end of November before I get through the first run, and likely the end of March before I complete the second run.

But it will be worth it. Already, I'm listening to so much more stuff than I have in the past few years. It's just so much easier to cue a song or album from the screen. It strange to see what I've "jumped ahead" to rip out of order. Of course I ripped EWF early in the A's, but for some reason I also grabbed LL Cool J and Skyzoo. And I skipped Coltrane for now. I really want to get him ripped, but I have so many of his CDs, it will probably take 3 days to get through all of them. So I waited.

In the morning, I start Miles.

Very easy to understand article that helped me understand digital audio a lot better.

I did a simple little tweak: I switched the USB port on my Mac that my DAC is connected to. Result: more "holographic" or 3D imaging and a noticeable increase in resolution. It's a minor difference overall, but it makes listening to music so much more enjoyable.

The reason I switched ports is that I was having trouble with the Bluetooth connection from the Mac mini to the wireless trackpad, and I remembered that leaving the outermost USB port unused was one of the suggestions to try. The mini has a notoriously weak Bluetooth transmitter and gets tripped up by RFI/EMI quite easily.

As I kept ripping CDs to my hard drive and began listening to my music almost exclusively via the computer than from my stereo, I realized the $5 speakers attached to the computer were woefully inadequate for the task. Being perpetually broke, I did a quick search for affordable monitors and found these.

I've had them for a couple of weeks now and I am blown away. They are much better than the tiny tinny speakers I've had on my computer for years, and well worth the money. My only regret is that I didn't get the next level up for only an additional $40. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd return these and order those, but I'm so lazy and these are great so I think I'll keep them.

Current audio gear. Not pictured are Sennheiser HD600s. I just added those black rubber feet for extra ventilation.
Nice!

I (kind-of recently) bought some Sennheiser 450BTs for my son to replace a pair that have worn down. He uses his airpods when he's out and about, and his over-the-ear Sennheiser's when he's in his room.

I should investigate sources to repair the earpads and repurpose his old pair to one of my daughters.

Is there a photo of it outside the box?

My secondary turntable is a Technics SL-1500 Mk II Quartz.

ETA: It looks like this one.

P. S. How much an audiophile am I? I literally had to walk over to the audio rack, with a flashlight and reading glasses, and read the identification directly off the deck. Did not remember it without looking.

P. P. S. I need to dust up there, also.
