In honor of our new home, I'm starting a new series to document the key record labels, past and present. Where better to start than:

144Document.JPEG

Year founded: 1985
Founder: Johnny Parth (Austria)
Still Active: Yes
Website: http://www.document-records.com/
Genres: Blues, jazz, country reissues
Format: LP, CD, download
Artists: from Ace (Johnson) to Zaidee (Jackson) and hundreds in between

Spotify Playlist:

Johnny Parth was a renaissance man, at various times working as an artist, art restorer, cornet player, concert promoter and happily for us, obsessive record collector. He began listening to blues music during World War 2 while living in Nazi Vienna. After the war, Johnny started reissuing rare jazz on LP and by the 1980's decided to start on the blues. His approach was simple if monumental: put out a series of LP's (later CD's) containing the complete recorded works of every blues artist. Later he added jazz, old time country and other genres.

From the Document website:

"The BIG one. At 679 CDs and growing this is one of the biggest slices of Afro-American music history that you will find anywhere. The complete recorded works of hundreds of blues, gospel, spiritual, boogie-woogie, songster artist; from the late 1800s onwards. Many, many recordings not available elsewhere these are the roots of soul, modern gospel, R&B, rap, black urban vocal music and rock."

Peppy novelty tunes by an enthusiastic blues quartet whose members at various times included Big Bill Broonzy and Georgia Tom.

Now on our Spotify Document Records playlist, above.

Tampa Red - Complete Recorded Works: Volume 13 (rec., 1945-1947, comp. 1994)

Chicago guitarist (born Hudson Whittaker) moves to a gritter urban sound as WWII ends. Big Maceo appears on the earlier sides, Ransom Knowling and Judge Riley on the later ones.

Added to our Spotify playlist.

Big Bill Broonzy - Complete Recorded Works: Volume 12 (rec. 1945-1947, comp. 1995)

The perfect companion to yesterday's post. Broonzy (born Lee Conley Bradley) was a seminal blues guitarist from the 20's through the 50's. His post-war sides, mostly recorded in Chicago for Columbia, feature a hard-edged sound similar to that of Tampa Red. Listen for the tenor sax of jazz man Don Byas on the first four sides.

Added to our Spotify playlist.

Johnnie Temple - Complete Recorded Works Vol, 2 (1938-1940, comp. 1994)

Mississippian Temple inhabited the twilight zone between blues and jazz, with clarinet and piano featured prominently along with his innovative guitar.

Unfortunately, they stopped making CD's and the old ones have gotten pretty pricey. At least they do have downloads which are cheap ($5.99 on eMusic).

Once I get my Spotify password jazz straightened out, I'll go that route. What kind of subscriptions is the gang around here doing?

Spotify Premium is $9.99 per month. For this you get:
  • Play on-demand on all your devices.
  • Download music to listen offline.
  • Ad-free.
  • High quality audio.
  • No skip limits.
  • Cancel anytime.
That's what I have. There's also a family subscription package.

I would take issue with it being "high quality" audio. When/if they come out with Spotify Lossless, then that'll be something.

Peetie Wheatstraw - Complete Recorded Works Vol. 2 (1934-1935, comp. 1994)

MI0000433372.jpg

William Bunch of Arkansas took on the stage name "Peetie Wheatstraw, the Devil's Son-In-Law" (wonder how his wife felt about that?) He recorded his unique style of piano blues very prolifically prior to an early death in a car vs. freight train accident in late 1941. This collection boasts an all star supporting cast including Charlie Jordan, Charlie McCoy and Casey Bill Weldon.

Added to our Spotify playlist.

I'll admit to never having listened to this collection all the way through (it's on my list of to-listens), but I'll add this here for the curious, but charming little ditty, "I Wish I Was a Single Girl Again."

Kelly Harrell - Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1925-26) (1998)
