Haydn In Plain Sight: The Classical Music Thread

Will you casually listen, will you attentively listen, or will you follow them word-for-word with the libretti?
Attentively listen but no libretti this time :)

And for those who fear that finishing this list, I am about to die, I salute you
But will point out that I’m still in the middle of both 1001 Books to Read and 1001 Movies to Watch “Before You Die” so hoping the fickle finger of fate keeps me alive at least until I finish those lists :)

I salute your devotion, Zeeb. As yet I’m still at #497, Harnoncourt’s version of Dvorak’s New World Symphony from 1893). It is surprising to me that the editors chose nearly 500 works from the 20th Century. But that period is not my strong point so it will be highly educational.

I listened to Barenboim’s Bayreuth Ring Cycle in its chronological place (#394 for those keeping score) and enjoyed it immensely. He managed to present its majestic power without bombast.
Yeah, creative choice to go out of order instead of chronologically with this list but thought (probably correctly) that as I’m much more a fan of 17th-19th century classical, the heavy 20th century emphasis would weight me down. Better for me that I mix it up

Chose a similar approach with the 1001 Books list (up to 615 books) and will probably end with Finnegan’s Wake or Proust’s Rememberances of Things Past

Though might try to summarize the last one instead :)

Here are The Most Valuable Classical Records of All Time according to Discogs.

#1 is a 7 LP box set called Mozart a Paris on Pathe that sold for $21,333. That's almost 200 times what you would pay for the CD reissue of the same collection on EMI.

#20, the massive box of The Complete Herbert von Karajan on DG and Decca is a relative bargain at $3,372. That's just $10 per disc, a thrift shop price for 330 remastered CD's with mini-LP sleeves. :worm:

Took a little bit but yesterday finally got to the final opera in the Ring Cycle
Plot-wise probably the dopiest of the four but musically strong
Finishing up today
