Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis

I'm going to hope someone comes through on Abbey Road because it seems just wrong to have there as an honorable mention. Gonna go with Dusty because I don't think anyone else is gonna pick her. I just love her and love this album to death. I've used the cliche about Dusty singing a phonebook and me being enthralled. She is my favorite female vocalist, and her ability to take these songs (composed by Gerry Goffin & Carole King, Burt Bacharach, and Randy Newman among others) and wrench such expressiveness and emotion out of their lyrics is incredible. Great overall sound too as the Brit comes to Memphis recruiting some great American session players and the soulful backup singers The Sweet Inspirations.

Coincidental connection: decided last night to choose this album then watched a PBS Highwayman concert on my DVR and lo and behold there was guitarist Reggie Young (who is on this album) playing with Waylon, Willie, Johnny, and Kris

Over Labor Day weekend, Sirius XM's Beatles channel had a countdown of the "top 100 Beatles songs" as voted by listeners. Number 3 was essential the whole side 2 medley of Abbey Road from "Because" to the end of the album (not sure if included "Her Majesty"). I briefly called foul as technically that's nine songs (albeit short ones) plus there's a distinct break before the "Golden Slumbers" medley, but I couldn't stay mad for long - it's such a great stretch of music!

And if it's so bloody great, how come you picked Leo Kottke
I think I have made it perfectly clear here (and at other defunct sites) that the Beatles are #1 over everything for me. I even said that I was going to forego Beatles selections in this series (although I couldn't resist "Rubber Soul"). "Abbey Road" is one of the first albums I can remember listening to it over and over and over as a young boy. It is in my Top 5 for Desert Island Discs.

You just didn't have the cojones to pick it yourself! Dusty? Pffft! ABBEY ROAD!! ;)

(Did I ever post the pictures of me crossing Abbey Road solo and then entering Abbey Road Studios and promptly getting kicked out by the front desk secretary? Good times, good times!)

I'd like to think picking Dusty shows I have even MORE cojones (or is it bigger cojones?)

You've told that story but never posted pictures - yes please. I had a picture on my exam room wall for awhile with my three kids and I crossing Abbey Road in a line - I would always be excited at the patient who recognized the site/reference

LA has gone to the Abbey Road style crosswalks outside the downtown court house. However, I gave up mentioning it to my peers, some of whom are old enough to understand but pretend not to.

I merely pretend not to like this.

Gram Parsons never achieved his full potential but, aided and abetted by Chris Hillman and Sneaky Pete Kleinow among others, came damn close here. His insurgent attack on the norms of country music still echoes in the work of Ryan Adams and a legion of other artists.

Methinks we were allowed honorable mentions three... No, five... if we so chose.

If that number has changed, I haven't seen it.

So, here goes:

Led Zeppelin ~ s/t

Procol Harum ~ A Salty Dog

Fleetwood Mac ~ Then Play On

King Crimson
~ In the Court of the Crimson King

Muddy Waters ~ Fathers and Sons
