Music Gourmets Presents 60 Years of Great Music - 1970

Truly a great one, Toe...It's one of those rare double albums where (I feel) every song has merit, but over the years, I find myself appreciating and loving some of the lesser know songs better, for example the beauty of "I Am Yours" and Dwayne's wonderful slide guitarwork on "Anyday"

I hate to go with one of the obvious, but this is my favorite album. I can't take the chance it will go unloved.

I was at an all-night party, preparing for a Johnny and Edgar Winter concert the next afternoon. Suddenly this amazing music came over the stereo. One song after another with these slick guitar solos, killer songwriting, expert production. There were too many people between me and the stereo to get there and find out what that magical record was on the turntable. From across the room I saw someone handling the album and I memorized the cover art. It wasn't until a few years later that I stumbled on it at the record store. I set aside anything else I had in my grubby teenage fists to purchase that record, race home and wallow in the goodness that was -- Derek and the Dominoes - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. To this day, it's still my favorite album. I can't imagine how many times I've heard it. While I cannot tolerate Classic Rock stations because I'm sick to death of hearing those old songs over and over, I can still listen to this album and enjoy it without reservation. Eric and Duane at their finest, with the Bonnie And Delanie backup section doing yeoman's work surrounding them with melodies and rhythms.

Stars are not enough. Five supernovas.

Stunning album indeed, my dear Uncle.

Thank you. One of my favorites has always been the kickoff - I Looked Away. It has this great rolling beat that doesn't overwhelm (like Little Wing would, for instance) but it draws you in and breeds excitement for the rest of the album. But the lyrics let you know that love and heartbreak are in store as well. Like you, I love the slide work on Anyday. The hootin' and hollerin' feel (in both the vocal style and slide guitar) of Tell The Truth, just feel like a barely-in-control blast of fun. The lesser known songs on this album are indeed as big a treat as the radio hits.

I'll go with a record from one of my favorite singer-songwriters in the whole world, no matter what he calls himself.

Aargh! RYM (or wherever Worm posts her images from) doesn't show through at work, so now I'm mystified who this incredible "singer-songwriter" that apparently has multiple names is (can't be Prince - too early ;))

My guess - Cat Stevens

You guessed right, Zeebs and it was another really hard year to choose. I almost went with a very good double concept album that got heavy rotation at my Catholic grammar school. :D

That is his best album of all time. Well...or at least the one that played the most during my "formative" years.
I could have made both of those statements had you not beaten me to them.

Although I would have put your second statement as "I played this one until the needle wore through the grooves to the other side of the album" because I'm kind of hyperbolic in my writing which, ironically, is an understatement.

Lots of great choices this year, including some essential live albums. But I'm going to surprise a few folks with this pick.

Van Morrison - His Band and The Street Choir

Yeah, I know Moondance is the bee's knees. :scared:But For HBATSC, Van The Man assembled his best ensemble ever and then took them on the road at Warner Brothers' expense to sharpen their chops. I see this record as the fruition of the process that began with Astral Weeks, in which Morrison found a way to combine his rock influences with the spiritual ones. The two hit singles here ("Domino" and "Blue Money") would be his last brush with chart success, giving this album an accessibility that would disappear from his later work.

I counted 15 picks so far.

Are we running at full potential, folks?

Probably....not sure if Randy posted (where's he been anyway?).
Fifteen, I feel, is pretty good participation. Of course some albums are gonna be left on the outside looking in (maybe we should be allowed two picks....or at least I'll pick twice ;))

I just PM'd Randy. I invite everybody to do so. Let's blow up his mailbox, but in a good way. Thx.

Pick twice? Who do you think you are? The New England Patriots?
