Music Gourmets Presents 60 Years of Great Music - 1973

The spotlight's low potency meant everyone had to stand still for two seconds for proper exposure...

It always struck me as a little bit of an odd cover. It seemed like it was supposed to be an action shot - convicts running away, caught in a spotlight. But there is very much no action. I never knew why they did it that way, just chalked it up to some artistic notion that I'd never understand. Now I do. It was the drugs.

Fantastic album, by the way. Paul would never match it.

I once saw Denny Laine give a little concert & spoken presentation in a conference room of about 50 people. For obvious reasons, it was on an acoustic guitar. The man is a genius on the guitar.

I've missed a couple years here. Life is really busy right now. Is it okay if I chime in late?

This was another incredibly difficult year. There are so many great albums. No wonder so much classic rock is still played on FM radio. After much gnashing of teeth, I chose...

Yes - Yessongs

Much complaint is made about the sound quality of this album. As a teenager with a pretty mediocre stereo setup, I was used to bad sound. And frankly, I probably didn't notice it much, because I was just wowed about the musicianship. My parents were music buffs, equally enjoying folk (Joan Baez, Pete Seeger) and classical. So I guess I was raised with an appreciation towards opposite ends of the spectrum. So having been awash in rock and roll up to this release, to hear this music and it's much more thoughtful arrangements was an ear-opener. (See what I did there?) And beyond that, the musicians themselves were pretty durned amazing. This was another album in constant rotation for me in my teen years.

Neil Young - Time Fades Away

This is a frighteningly honest document of Neil's tumultuous Harvest tour which found him backed by the "Stray Gators" in the wake of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten's drug overdose. Ragged for sure, but on a bad day it is my favorite Neil live album. After listening to this, I realize my life could always be a hell of a lot worse.

Okay, a couple things.

I admire the tar out of Neil Young in the same regard I do Bob Dylan. Incredible song writer, voice that makes me want to tear off my ears for lent. Harvest is the one Neil Young album I really like. And I have a fondness for tour albums. I don't know why. So I've never listened to this, but I'm going to.

@Unsomnambulist I respect your distaste for writing about albums and would not push you to do so. But a post that describes why someone likes an album drives me to listen to it with that point of view in mind. This is tomorrow's first listen.
