Late again, Zeeba, you say? Hey it gives an extra day or two to think about your 1999 pick :)

Welcome to the next year in our "Great Music" series - 1999

Here's the rules:

Each Friday (typically) we'll introduce a new year from 1957 through 2016. Each member selects an album released in that year with a few lines (or more) on why you picked it/enjoy it. Your selection does not have to be the most important release or the most admired release of that year (though it certainly can be), simply an album that grabs you and that you really love.

However, once an album is selected by a member, you must choose a different album.

Together we will compile quite the canon of "Great Music" and, who knows, maybe inspire each other to check out some new artists (or to revisit old forgotten classics).

This week - the albums of 1999

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

Built To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret

I remember getting this from a CD mail-order club in 2000 and being blown away by it. Cemented in my mind that "indie rock" could absolutely be as great as more established, older artists. Also, rock was not "dead" yet.

Eminem - Slim Shady LP

Californication would be my first pick. Evaluating my collection, I really don't have many albums from this year compared with adjacent years. Busy year for me between moving, new job, second child - guess I wasn't listening to much. Still, I've got this one and, like him or hate him (and I like his music), what a bombshell this was

Paul McCartney - Run Devil Run

Ultimate Classic Rock sez:

After spending a year in mourning, Paul McCartney made a roaring return to rock and roll. He had lost his wife (and frequent musical collaborator), Linda, to cancer in the spring of 1998, then vowed to take an extended break from performing and recording to deal with the excruciating loss. When Paul picked up his old Hofner bass again, he decided his next project would celebrate his rock roots. Run Devil Run would be a collection of (mostly) pre-Beatles rock tunes.

I spent the big bucks for its predecessor, Choba B CCCP, at CD Banzai. That was one of the first gray market music stores of the digital era. If anyone is interested, I'll upload it. Run Devil Run is just as enjoyable; a bit more production time gave Macca a chance to devote his full energy to these tunes.
