Again sport for the tardiness of the post. Crazy weekend

Welcome to the next year in our "Great Music" series - 2003

Here's the rules:

Each Friday (typically) we'll introduce a new year from 1957 through 2016. Each member selects an album released in that year with a few lines (or more) on why you picked it/enjoy it. Your selection does not have to be the most important release or the most admired release of that year (though it certainly can be), simply an album that grabs you and that you really love.

However, once an album is selected by a member, you must choose a different album.

Together we will compile quite the canon of "Great Music" and, who knows, maybe inspire each other to check out some new artists (or to revisit old forgotten classics).

This week - the albums of 2003

While, because of the immediacy of joyous "whoa" I felt hearing it the first few times, I want to choose "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'", I have to admit to myself that it's not even in my current top-5 for the year. And honestly, I haven't listened to it in years. Still, I had to plug it.

My real choice is ...

Maktub - Khronos

A masterfully organic mixture of Rock and Soul and Pop (RYM tags it as "alternative rock" and "neo-soul") that blew me away when I discovered (via a mention on a non-music website) the band way back when. Maybe they'll release another album one year and keep the groovy sounds going.

This album features a cover of "No Quarter" by LZ. I can't compare the two because I think I've heard the original only once and don't remember it. The version here is very good.

Jet - Get Born

Richard Thompson - 1000 Years Of Popular Music

The scope of this project still staggers me. Only Richard Thompson has the vision to mashup an 11th century English round with Nat King Cole and Britney Spears and have the results be anything other than incoherent. These live recordings from a series of post-millennial shows Thompson did illustrate how he can handle literally any request from an audience.

And, though it was a short week, this is probably that time I should say, "If you have any 2003 picks on the week, time to get 'em in". 2004 is right around the corner

The Allman Brothers Band - Hittin' The Note

Their last studio release. It's good that with all the history, the drama, the low points and eventual revolving door of personnel, in the end they went out winning. This was a really good formation of the band and a surprisingly good studio album to mark its end.
