To quote "Sister Christian", we're motorin' through the 21st century!

Welcome to the next year in our "Great Music" series - 2005

Here's the rules:

Each Friday (typically) we'll introduce a new year from 1957 through 2016. Each member selects an album released in that year with a few lines (or more) on why you picked it/enjoy it. Your selection does not have to be the most important release or the most admired release of that year (though it certainly can be), simply an album that grabs you and that you really love.

However, once an album is selected by a member, you must choose a different album.

Together we will compile quite the canon of "Great Music" and, who knows, maybe inspire each other to check out some new artists (or to revisit old forgotten classics).

This week - the albums of 2005

Little Big Town - The Road to Here

A different pick for me. A lot of this record speaks to me. Especially the song I picked.

The Budos Band - s/t

In an earlier year I think I chose a band called The Daktaris - a neo Afro-Funk group staffed mostly by Daptone Records studio musicians. This is another band born of Daptone regulars.

A lot of jazz leaves me bewildered. This I like very much. Similar Afrobeat rhythm section as the Daktaris, but on the front of the stage this time is a wonderful jazzy NY horn section. The afrobeat rhythms keep your shoulders pumping, but the American horns (and occasional organ or flute) on top make for a fun contrast.

K'naan - The Dusty Foot Philosopher

Today, I would probably put two or three or four of my HMs in this spot, but I remember how much I loved this when it was released and that memory is enough to keep this in the top spot for another iteration of this list.

That and the fact that one of my son's best friends is ending a year in Egypt because his family is from northern Africa and they moved to Egypt last summer to be closer to home but the boy is returning back to my son's high school in August because home for him is America and this album seems somehow fitting to me as a backdrop to all that ...

Anyone else late this week like me (Sam??):

Anyhow good "Honorable Mentions" by PatrikC but happily my choice for the year wasn't there so I can still post it as my choice

The Decemberists - Picaresque

IMO their best album

I'd throw The White Stripes' Get Behind Me Satan in as an Honorable Mention; Gorrilaz Demon Days as well
