Music Gourmets Presents 60 Years of Great Music - 2006

Welcome to the next year in our "Great Music" series - 2006

Here's the rules:

Each Friday (typically) we'll introduce a new year from 1957 through 2016. Each member selects an album released in that year with a few lines (or more) on why you picked it/enjoy it. Your selection does not have to be the most important release or the most admired release of that year (though it certainly can be), simply an album that grabs you and that you really love.

However, once an album is selected by a member, you must choose a different album.

Together we will compile quite the canon of "Great Music" and, who knows, maybe inspire each other to check out some new artists (or to revisit old forgotten classics).

This week - the albums of 2006

Mando Diao - Ode to Ochrasy

Bruce Springsteen - We Shall Overcome, The Seeger Sessions

After several albums showcasing Bruce's personal depression, he released this wonderful, happy compilation of Pete Seeger covers. The story goes, he recruited many of his wife's Americana artists, gathered them in his house and recorded this album in two days of quick and dirty live recordings. It's a wonderful departure from the previous several albums into a fun, frolicking, under-produced collection of just fun recordings. It has a personal tie for me, as my parents were big Pete Seeger fans, and often had friends over to drink a little too much and play and sing these songs in the living room accompanied by mom's guitar and dad's mandolin.

How did I miss this one? Love this album. Happy it was picked (and happy with my pick too)

Oh and next year (2007) posted, so last chance to get in your 2006 picks :)

I figure I should go with what would be considered a "regular" album but will instead go with what truly was the best thing released this year.

Tom Waits - Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers, & Bastards

26 songs from soundtracks and such, and 30 new ones (or some such breakdown). 3 brilliant hours of Waits goodness!!

The Appleseed Cast ~ Low Level Owl: Volumes I & II [Compilation]

There might be some pushback on this one, as the two volumes were actually released separately in 2001. Volume I was released on CD prior to 9/11, with Volume II on CD after that event. Ojai Sam made reference to "Pictures of a Burning City," which appears as the end track on Vol. I and the lead-in track on Vol. II, inferring some sort of prescience.

The LP compilation was released in 2006, comprised of six sides.

I just got this from a member of Talkbeer as a thank you for starting the Great Music series there. I haven't had a chance to listen yet.

HM: Amy Winehouse - Back to Black (2006)

Sad it didn't get picked. Sad I didn't pick it. Listening to Sharon Jones currently and feeling soulful and telling myself "Damn! Why didn't I pick this one". Love it, but Arctic Monkeys is a great one too - clearly I was feeling more energetic at the time of that pick. Probably a "more important" album clinically than beautifully sung neo-soul. Both of them heavy on my rotation

I kind of had the same thought. I love that album. I guess I just assume "everyone else" will pick the albums on the first page.

This would have been my pick if I had gone with a "regular" album, but the Waits was just too great.
